About the Role
We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Billing Specialist / Accession Specialist to join our growing diagnostic laboratory team. This dual-role position is ideal for candidates with experience in both medical laboratory billing and specimen accessioning. The successful candidate will ensure accurate patient and insurance billing while supporting laboratory operations through proper specimen intake, data entry, and accessioning procedures.
Key ResponsibilitiesBilling Specialist Duties
- Process and submit insurance claims accurately and timely.
- Verify patient demographics, insurance eligibility, and billing information.
- Follow up on denied, rejected, or unpaid claims.
- Post payments, adjustments, and reconcile accounts.
- Work with commercial insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, and other payers.
- Resolve billing discrepancies and patient account issues.
- Maintain compliance with HIPAA and laboratory billing regulations.
Accession Specialist Duties
- Receive, inspect, and accession incoming laboratory specimens.
- Verify specimen integrity, patient information, and test requisitions.
- Enter specimen and patient data into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
- Label, track, and route specimens according to laboratory protocols.
- Communicate with physician offices and clients regarding missing or incomplete information.
- Ensure compliance with laboratory quality standards and chain-of-custody procedures.
Qualifications
- Minimum 1 years of experience in a diagnostic laboratory, pathology, molecular, toxicology, or clinical laboratory setting.
- Experience with medical billing and claims processing.
- Experience with specimen accessioning and laboratory workflows.
- Familiarity with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS), EMR/EHR systems, and billing software.
- Strong understanding of insurance verification, claim submissions, and denial management.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS coding.
- Experience with laboratory billing for molecular, toxicology, pathology, or clinical testing.
- Prior experience working with Medicare and commercial payers.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a must.
