JOB SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Vice President of Lands and Natural Resources, the Biologist supports Doyon’s stewardship of its lands by providing wildlife, forestry, and environmental expertise. This position represents Doyon on environmental and wildlife matters, participates in consultations with state and federal agencies and will attend public meetings specific to environmental and wildlife-related topics, and review environmental permitting and processes for projects considered or those being conducted on Doyon land or within the Doyon region. The Biologist works closely with the Lands and Natural Resources teams and Village Outreach Liaison to protect shareholder interests while ensuring responsible for resource management.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Review federal, state, and local environmental documents, land use plans, land disposals, and management proposals; provide technical analysis, comments, and recommendations.
  • Represent Doyon at public meetings and regulatory proceedings related to wildlife and environmental issues, including salmon, moose, bison, caribou, and habitat management.
  • Review and evaluate environmental permits and regulatory compliance for projects occurring on Doyon lands or within the Doyon region.
  • Coordinate and conduct outreach with tribal councils, village corporations, and community stakeholders.
  • Conduct or assist with biological surveys, environmental site assessments, and field evaluations.
  • Support and advance Doyon’s forest management program and related resource initiatives.
  • Serve as an alternate point of contact for shareholders, government agencies, and the public regarding land, wildlife, and environmental inquiries.
  • Maintain professional relationships with regulatory agencies and partner organizations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION:
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Must meet one of the following education and/or work experience qualifications:
  • Associate degree in Wildlife Biology, Environmental Science, Natural Resources, or related field; OR
    • One (1) to two (2) years of relevant experience with private, tribal, state, or federal agencies; OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Wildlife Biology, Environmental Science, Forestry, or related field.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act and amendments, as well as the general principles of public land law applicable to the grants made pursuant to ANCSA and other public land laws such as the Mining Law of 1872
  • Knowledge in environmental policy and wildlife management
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to work in a team environment
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
The majority of work is performed in a professional office setting with a wide variety of people with differing functions, personalities and abilities.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The work may require site visits for multiple days at a time, but is otherwise generally sedentary when in the office, requiring routine walking, standing, bending, and carrying items weighing less than forty pounds— [Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions].
