Job Summary
We are seeking a talented and detail-oriented Book Layout & Design Specialist to help transform manuscripts, photography, and artwork into visually engaging books. In this role, you will be responsible for designing page layouts that enhance storytelling, maintain readability, and present artwork in a polished and professional format.

Most writing and imagery will already be provided. Your primary responsibility will be organizing content, placing text and images, and creating cohesive layouts using Adobe InDesign. Current projects include a comprehensive catalogue of Geoffrey C. Smith’s artwork as well as future books focused on specific themes, travels, and creative projects.

This position offers the opportunity to contribute to meaningful publishing projects within a small, collaborative creative team while helping shape the presentation of a lifetime of artwork.

  • Prepare files for professional printing and publishing
  • Manage large volumes of images and written material for layout and production
  • Apply strong typography and layout principles to enhance readability and visual flow
  • Ensure high attention to detail in formatting, alignment, and page consistency
  • Assist with photographing artwork when needed (photography skills are a plus)
  • Occasionally assist with other creative or organizational tasks within the studio environment as part of a small team

Skills

  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe InDesign (required)
  • Experience designing books, catalogues, magazines, or editorial publications

  • Strong attention to detail and production accuracy
  • Ability to work independently while meeting deadlines

  • Ability to follow design direction while contributing thoughtful creative input

This role works closely with the artist and gallery staff. While creative ideas are welcome, the ability to execute layouts according to specific direction is essential, as final design decisions are guided by the artist.

Candidates should be comfortable working independently while also collaborating with a small team and adjusting designs based on feedback.
