The Communications Consultant plays a vital role at Books Are Wings by supporting the organization's communications strategy during a maternity leave coverage period. This temporary position requires a dynamic and organized individual with excellent communication skills and experience in nonprofit communications to maintain consistent messaging and community engagement, who is able to follow a pre-existing communications plan for the duration of the contract. This role may be fully remote for the right candidate.

BAW works to engage students in their classrooms, at school functions, community events, and playgrounds. Pay rate: $35 an hour

This is a contract position for maternity leave coverage, lasting approximately 3 months, with the possibility of a 2-week extension. No benefits are included. Position would start mid-January.

Position Summary: The Communications Consultant will maintain and execute Books Are Wings' communications strategy, ensuring consistent messaging across all platforms while supporting ongoing programs, fundraising campaigns, and community engagement efforts.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Content Creation and Management:

  • Develop engaging content for social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn)
  • Write and edit blog posts, digital newsletters, and website content
  • Create compelling stories highlighting Books Are Wings' impact and programs
  • Assist Books Are Wings team with creating content for flyers, mailings, and email blasts

Fundraising and Campaign Communications:

  • Lead responsibility for 401Gives Campaign planning and launch
  • Create and send emails to donors regarding campaigns and organizational updates
  • Develop compelling fundraising appeals and donor stewardship communications
  • Support grant writing efforts with impact stories and data presentation
  • Coordinate campaign messaging across all communication channels

Social Media and Digital Communications:

  • Schedule and monitor social media posts across all platforms
  • Engage with followers and respond to inquiries in a timely manner
  • Track social media analytics and report on performance metrics
  • Update website content as needed to ensure accuracy and relevance

Media Relations and Public Outreach:

  • Draft press releases and media advisories for BAW programs and events
  • Maintain and update media contact lists
  • Monitor media coverage and compile relevant news reports
  • Support community engagement efforts through strategic communications

Program Support:

  • Collaborate with Program and Outreach Coordinator on promotional materials
  • Document programs through photography and storytelling as possible
  • Support Tale Mail program communications and promotional efforts
  • Assist with volunteer recruitment communications across various platforms

Administrative Communications:

  • Maintain consistent organizational voice across all communications
  • Coordinate with team members on communications needs
  • Other communications duties as assigned

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, journalism, or related field
  • Minimum 2-3 years of experience in nonprofit communications or similar role
  • Experience with fundraising campaigns and donor communications preferred
  • Excellent writing and editing skills with attention to detail
  • Proficiency in social media management and analytics tools
  • Experience with content management systems (CMS) and email marketing platforms (Sprout, Bloomerang, Constant Contact)
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Experience working with diverse populations and communities
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Passion for literacy and Books Are Wings' mission
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred but not required
