TITLE: School Bus Driver

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
The School Bus Driver will provide transportation for our students to and from school on a daily basis, safely and efficiently, while providing a positive influence on their lives. A bus driver will also be responsible for providing transportation for field trips.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Licensing/Certification:

Valid North Carolina Drivers License in good standing
● Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Class ‘B’ with air brakes and S and P endorsements
● Annual “School Bus Driver’s Physician's Certificate”

Education:
High school diploma, GED, or successful completion of the MCPS Literacy test

Experience:
● Must have sufficient vehicle driving experience to have mastered the skills necessary to safely operate all types of vehicles and school buses used in transporting students
Desirable:

● Previous experience with children of all ages
Minimum Qualifications:

● Must be 21 years of age unless approved otherwise (State law mandates a minimum of 18 years of age)
● Furnish a driving record from the Department of Motor Vehicles showing that within the previous five years, the applicant has not been convicted of a charge of driving under the influence of intoxicating liquors or drugs, convicted of a felony, or assigned to any alcohol safety action program or driver alcohol rehabilitation program; has not been convicted of more than one moving violation or assigned to attend any driver improvement programs within the past 12 months; and has no charge of reckless driving within the previous two years. This record is required annually for all school bus drivers in the State of North
Carolina.

● Have sufficient physical and mental ability to safely operate a school bus and/or perform required job tasks

● Be able to read and write; to understand verbal and written instructions in English; and to communicate with students, fellow employees, and transportation department personnel

● Provide a reference statement, upon initial employment, signed by two reputable area citizens, attesting to his her good moral character

● Applicants chosen as candidates for this position must be able to successfully complete the required
State of North Carolina School Bus Driver training course provided by Brunswick County Schools and obtain a Class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with air brake certification and School Bus and
Passenger endorsements.

● Must be able to pass the mental and physical requirements of both local and state and provide certification that he or she is physically able to perform job requirements, upon initial employment, and annually thereafter

● Submit a certificate showing that the applicant is tuberculin free before final hiring process can be completed.

● As part of the employment process, an FBI/Criminal History (with fingerprinting) and Child Protective
Services record search is required. The record will be reviewed for legal infractions that would preclude employment with Brunswick County Schools.

● Federal law provides standards for creating a workplace free of illegal drugs and alcohol. As required by this law, all school bus drivers are subject to pre-employment drug and alcohol testing, and random testing thereafter.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
● Transport students safely to and from school on a daily basis
● Comply with the Motor Vehicle Laws and Regulations of the State Board of Education including, but not limited to, the following:
● Govern the speed of the bus according to limits established by law for school buses while transporting pupils
● Come to a full stop when approaching a railroad crossing using state guidelines, to look and to listen carefully, in order to positively determine when it is safe to cross the track
● Operate the bus over the assigned route and make no change unless duly authorized by the Supervisor of Transportation or designee
● Exercise every possible care for the safety and comfort of the pupils en-route and to permit no pupil to ride on the outside of the bus or with head, hands, or arms out of the windows
● Open and close the entrance door and keep it securely closed while the bus is in motion. This responsibility shall not be delegated to any other person.
● Complete and record daily pre-trip inspections of the school bus and report any repair needed immediately to the school bus garage and any additional repairs in writing to be turned in promptly
● Maintain discipline and report cases of disobedience to the school principal
● In case of a breakdown, to place bidirectional reflective triangles on the highway according to regulations, and to notify the transportation department immediately. To keep the pupils in the bus until it is repaired unless conditions justify evacuation or transfer to another bus.

● Report all school bus accidents and/or student injuries to the transportation department immediately
● Refrain from prohibited use of alcohol or illegal drugs, tobacco, profane, and unclean language and to see that the pupils conduct themselves likewise
● Make all reports, attend meetings, and training sessions required by school authorities
● Be accountable for bidirectional reflective triangles, first-aid kit, fire extinguisher, body fluid kit, and any other equipment on the assigned school bus
● Prevent any object from being placed in the bus that will restrict passageway or emergency exits, and to keep bottles or other loose objects off the bus.
● Inform the transportation office if a driver is taking medicine (or any other substance) that may impact their ability to safely operate a school bus or supervise students
● Keep the bus clean and sanitary at all times.
● Conduct emergency evacuation drills in keeping with state and local regulations and as required by the supervisor
● Drive defensively under varying traffic conditions and inclement weather
● Report personal absences in time for the supervisor or designee to secure a substitute driver
● Attend all required in-service meetings
● Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor of Transportation or designee

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
● Must be physically able to safely drive a school bus according to guidelines
● May be required to lift up to 50 pounds without assistance
● Must be able to withstand cold and hot temperatures
● Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, squat, kneel, and twist

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Driving and working in school buses of varying sizes and models

TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS:
● Proper use of 2-way radio

SALARY GRADE: BD

REPORTS TO: Supervisor of Transportation and/or Transportation Coordinator

EVALUATION: The bus driver is evaluated by the Supervisor of Transportation on the standard performance appraisal evaluation implemented by Brunswick County Schools.

FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt and may have overtime hours.

OSHA: A Bus Driver is not expected to handle any human body fluids, biological agents, laboratory chemicals, or be exposed to hazardous materials such as noise, asbestos, or carcinogens.

ADA: The employer will make reasonable accommodations to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential job functions in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.

This job description will be reviewed periodically as duties and responsibilities change with business necessity.
