Building Automation Graphics Specialist

Reports to: Director, User Experience & Project Success

Location: New York City (In-person only)

Salary Range: $85,000 – $115,000 annually or more, depending on experience, certifications, and technical expertise.

Role Summary

Designs operator-facing interfaces for building systems, similar to HMI/SCADA environments. Translates engineering intent and system behavior into clear, reliable visual screens. Focuses on real-time system status, alarms, and usability in live operating conditions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop graphics for HVAC systems (AHUs, VAVs, plant systems, etc.) within BAS platforms (Niagara, Honeywell EBI, or similar)
  • Translate sequences of operation and point lists into clear, functional system layouts

Ensure graphics reflect real system behavior: statuses, alarms, interlocks, and live values

  • Apply and maintain company graphics standards for layout, naming, and navigation

Organize information so operators can quickly understand system state and take action

  • Support project teams by delivering graphics on schedule and coordinating with engineering and programming
  • Assist in developing reusable templates, components, and graphic libraries

Contribute to internal and client-facing materials (diagrams, infographics, system overviews)

Required Qualifications

  • 25 years of experience in graphics, technical illustration, or UI design
  • Strong proficiency in Adobe Illustrator (or similar vectorbased tools)
  • Ability to organize complex technical information into clear visual layouts
  • High attention to detail and consistency
  • Ability to work from incomplete information and make reasonable design decisions
  • Strong communication skills and willingness to collaborate with technical teams
  • Portfolio should demonstrate ability to organize complex information into clear, functional visuals (e.g., system diagrams, dashboards, or technical interfaces).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Building Automation Systems
  • Familiarity with HVAC systems and mechanical concepts
  • Experience with HTML/CSS or frontend UI environments
  • Background in technical illustration, industrial design, or data visualization

Interview Process

Candidates will be asked to complete a short take-home exercise based on a real-world example. The exercise evaluates the ability to organize technical information into a clear and usable graphic.
