Applied Energy Consulting Inc. (AEC) is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Junior Energy Modeler to support building energy modeling, analysis, and sustainability consulting projects.
This is an entry-level to early-career position intended for candidates with foundational knowledge in building systems and a strong interest in energy modeling. The successful candidate will receive hands-on training in advanced tools such as IESVE and RETScreen, and will work closely with senior engineers on real-world projects across municipal, institutional, and commercial sectors.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in developing building energy models using:
- IESVE (training will be provided)
- RETScreen
- EnergyPlus, eQuest, or similar tools (if already familiar)
- Review architectural, mechanical, and electrical drawings to extract modeling inputs
- Support NECB and ASHRAE-based compliance modeling workflows
- Perform basic energy and GHG analysis
- Assist in evaluating Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs), including:
- Envelope upgrades
- HVAC systems
- Lighting and controls
- Prepare structured technical documentation and reports
- Support model calibration and data validation tasks
- Collaborate with engineers, designers, and project teams
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree (or final year student) in:
- Mechanical Engineering
- Building Engineering / Building Science
- Environmental Engineering or related field
- Basic understanding of building systems (HVAC, envelope, lighting)
- Exposure to at least one modeling tool (EnergyPlus, eQuest, OpenStudio, TRACE, etc.)
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently and follow technical instructions
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with NECB, ASHRAE 90.1, or LEED concepts
- Strong Excel skills for data handling and analysis
- Interest in Python or data-driven workflows
- Previous internship or co-op experience in energy or engineering
