About This Role

The Building Maintenance Technician supports the facilities team by assisting with the upkeep, repair, and efficient operation of building systems. This role performs routine maintenance tasks, responds to service requests, and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems under the guidance of senior staff. The Technician helps ensure a safe, comfortable, and well-maintained environment for staff and visitors.


Essential Functions
:

  • Assist with routine inspections and scheduled maintenance of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.
  • Perform minor repairs such as replacing filters, light fixtures, and hardware.
  • Help troubleshoot equipment issues, prepare tools and materials, and carry out repairs under supervision.
  • Respond to basic service calls and facility requests in a timely, professional manner, escalating complex issues as needed.
  • Record maintenance activities, track supplies, and report equipment conditions or safety concerns.
  • Provide access and support for contractors and external service providers as directed.
  • Follow all organizational safety protocols, OSHA guidelines, and building codes.
  • Maintain clean and safe walkways, entryways, and shared spaces.
  • May be required to do political work for candidates and member political education as part of job duties.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to use hand tools and power tools safely.
  • Willingness to learn technical skills, including reading work orders, manuals, and diagrams.
  • Good communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Strong problem-solving mindset and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and prioritize assigned tasks.

Minimum Qualifications: (Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job may be considered.)

  • Two (2) to Five (5) years of experience in maintenance, construction, or a related trade; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and interest in facilities operations.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., climb ladders, and work in various environmental conditions.
  • Availability to work occasional evenings, weekends, or participate in on-call rotation with supervision.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Trade school coursework or certification in HVAC, electrical, plumbing, or facilities maintenance.
  • Prior experience in a commercial, institutional, or multi-tenant facility.
  • Familiarity with safety standards, OSHA requirements, or building codes.
  • Exposure to computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) or similar software.

Typical Working Conditions: The typical working conditions described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this Job, requirements include:

  • Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in a building setting.
  • Routine exposure to mechanical spaces, rooftops, basements, and common areas.
  • Frequent interaction with staff, vendors, and supervisors.
  • May be required work outside of normal business hours to include weekends, evenings, holidays, etc.

Physical Working Conditions: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this Job, requirements include:

  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, and climbing ladders.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move equipment or materials up to 50 lbs.
  • Occasional work in confined spaces or at heights.
  • Occasional exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and varying temperatures.
  • Occasionally may be required to travel between multiple facility sites within the organization’s service area to perform inspections, maintenance, or emergency repairs.


Compensation
:

Providing current or previous salary information is optional and will not be factored into hiring decisions. Prospective Employees covered by the CBA can request a copy of the wage scale, the CBA, and any current relevant MOUs upon application to the position.

This position is full-time, exempt. This position is included in the Bargaining Unit. Pay ranges from $30 – $39.14 per year. Benefits include vacation, holiday, and sick leave benefits, fully employer paid health, dental, vision, and life insurance, defined benefit pension plan, and optional 401(k), WFH credit, pet insurance, and more.
