Building Permit Technician

Job Summary:
The Permit Technician is responsible for assisting the public, contractors, and developers in navigating the permit process by accepting, reviewing, and processing building permit applications. This position provides essential administrative and technical support to the Building Department by ensuring all documentation is complete, accurate, and in compliance with applicable codes and regulations. The Permit Technician serves as a liaison between applicants and plan reviewers or inspectors, helping facilitate timely issuance of permits and accurate recordkeeping. Two to three years of permitting, planning, or building department experience is preferred.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist customers at the permit counter, by phone, and via email with questions related to permit applications, submittal requirements, and basic code information.
  • Receive, log, and process a variety of permit applications, including building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and related construction permits.
  • Review permit applications and accompanying documents for completeness and basic compliance before routing to appropriate reviewers.
  • Calculate and collect permit fees based on established fee schedules and valuation criteria.
  • Schedule inspections and coordinate with building inspectors to ensure timely site visits.
  • Maintain electronic and physical records of plans, applications, permits, and inspection histories.
  • Issue permits after plan check approval and fee payment, ensuring all required documentation and clearances are in place.
  • Provide general information related to zoning, building codes, and development standards, referring technical questions to appropriate staff.
  • Coordinate with internal departments (Planning, Engineering, Fire, etc.) and outside agencies for required approvals.
  • Monitor the status of plan reviews and inspections and communicate updates to applicants.
  • Prepare standard reports related to permits issued, inspections completed, and fees collected.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; coursework in construction, planning, or public administration is a plus.
  • Knowledge of construction permitting processes, building codes, zoning regulations, and municipal procedures.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to read site plans, plot plans, and basic construction drawings.
  • High level of organization and attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize work, handle multiple tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and electronic document handling.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation (if field visits or off-site support is needed).

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods in an office setting.
  • Occasional visits to construction sites may occur for job familiarity or support.

Preferred Experience:

  • Prior work experience in a building, planning, or engineering department.
  • Familiarity with plan routing, permit fee calculation, and inspection coordination.

Work Environment:

  • Primarily office-based with extensive interaction with the public and staff.
  • Occasional fieldwork may be required for training or project support.
  • Fast-paced environment requiring multitasking and regular communication.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $30.00 - $38.00 per hour
