Burbank Youth Programming and Payroll Associate

Characteristics:

Under the direction of the Burbank Branch Supervisor, the Youth Programming Associate is responsible for creating a high-energy, welcoming environment for youth (birth through high school) both inside and outside the library walls.

The Burbank Youth Programming Associate role focuses on maintaining the youth department’s physical and digital presence, executing a consistent monthly programming cycle, and acting as the face of the library at Columbia High School and the broader school district. In addition, the position works with other branch and district staff, performs circulation duties, contributes to maintenance functions at the branch, and other duties as assigned.

This position will have 21 hours per week scheduled at the Burbank branch. This position also comes with the possibility of occasional added shifts. Candidates must be 18 years or older and available Monday through Saturday, possess a valid driver’s license, and have the ability to transport outreach materials to district locations.

General Performance Requirements:

● Able to lift moderate weights (up to 35 pounds) at frequent intervals

● Advanced computer skills

  • Competent with Microsoft Office
  • Familiar with basic social media posting practices
  • Confident in learning to navigate new programs, devices, and interfaces
  • Able to conduct internet and catalog searches using Boolean functions

● Possession of driver’s License and access to functioning personal vehicle

Youth Programming Expectations and Responsibilities:

● Circulation and customer service duties, such as:

  • Cash handling
  • Checking materials in and out
  • Preparing items for circulation
  • Repairing damaged items
  • Answering phones
  • Maintaining email correspondence
  • Directing patrons to materials and services
  • Other clerical and circulation duties as needed

● Utilize a variety of print and electronic resources to direct patrons and answer questions

● Focused Outreach (Tuesday Priority):

  • Biweekly Pop-Up Library: Lead biweekly visits to Columbia High School on designated outreach days, bringing library resources directly to students and facilitating on-site checkouts and card sign-ups.
  • School & District Liaison: Serve as the primary point of contact for Columbia High faculty and students.
  • Community Connection: Actively expand outreach efforts to the entire school district and other community hubs, with a primary focus on establishing a library presence during the Tuesday outreach windows.

● Youth Environment & Upkeep:

  • Passive Programming: Design and launch monthly rotating passive programs to engage youth and families visiting the space independently.
  • Themed Displays: Curate and maintain monthly book and media displays that are visually striking, seasonally relevant, and refreshed regularly.

● Monthly Programming & Digital Content:

  • Branch Social Media Management: Serve as the lead for branch-level social media accounts. This includes creating a content calendar, posting regular updates about library services, and engaging with the community online to increase branch visibility.
  • Internal Visuals: Create a monthly Reel (video promo) for display on the library’s internal television. This content highlights new arrivals, upcoming kits, or library news to keep the community informed.
  • Take & Makes: Conceptualize and prep monthly Take & Make craft kits that provide youth with creative, grab-and-go activities.
  • Monthly In-Person Event: Plan and facilitate one targeted in-person youth program per month that promotes literacy, skill-building, or community connection.

● Provide high quality library assistance to patrons and staff, including:

  • Knowledge and implementation of ALA, ARSL, and WLA standards
  • Knowledge of library classification and organization of materials
  • Assistance with reference and readers advisory
  • General promotion of library services, materials, and perspectives

● Handle multiple tasks with continual interruption while prioritizing patron and staff support

● Exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality of information

● Manage personal professional growth including continuing education

● Accept assignments from the Branch Supervisor

● Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Equivalent relevant experience or Bachelor's degree
  • Ability to speak, read, write, and understand the English language
  • Strong interpersonal skills for school-based networking
  • Proficiency in social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, etc.) and basic video editing for internal TV and social content
  • Ability to manage a monthly production and posting calendar independently.

Compensation:

  • $22.70-25.55/hour
