Primary Purpose:

The Business Data Analyst – Operational Excellence is a strategic contributor within the Operational Excellence function, reporting to the Strategic Portfolio Office (SPO). This role leverages business intelligence, advanced analytics, and predictive modeling to transform complex operational and business data into actionable insights that guide Technical Operational leadership decisions, enhance operational strategy, and drive performance across enterprise.

Essential Functions:

Analyze data from operational systems (e.g., LIMS, ERP, automation platforms) to identify trends, inefficiencies, and opportunities for improvement.

Develop and maintain dashboards and reports that track key performance indicators (KPIs) such as throughput, turnaround time, cost per test, and resource utilization.

Standardize reporting across functions to ensure consistency, transparency, and comparability.

Provide analytical support to the Strategic Portfolio Office to assess project portfolio health and alignment with long-term business goals.

Conduct scenario modeling and forecasting to support prioritization and investment decisions.

Translate complex data into executive-level summaries and visualizations for strategic discussions.

Apply statistical and predictive modeling techniques to forecast demand, capacity, and operational performance.

Build simulations to evaluate the impact of operational or strategic changes.

Partner with Operations, SPO, IT, and leadership to align data needs and priorities.

Define and refine KPIs and performance benchmarks in collaboration with stakeholders.

Promote a culture of data-driven decision-making and continuous improvement.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret complex datasets.

Proficiency in data tools such as SQL, Power BI, Tableau, Excel, and Python or R.

Understanding of operational processes (e.g., laboratory workflows, supply chain, manufacturing).

Excellent communication and data storytelling skills to influence stakeholders.

Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.

High attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy and integrity.

Physical and Other Requirements:

Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.

Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

Mobility: The person in this position needs to occasionally move between work sites and inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.

Communicate: Frequently communicate with others.

PPE: Biohazard laboratory environment that requires use of personal protective equipment in accordance with CDC and OSHA regulations and company policies.

ARUP Policies and Procedures: To conduct self in compliance with all ARUP Policies and Procedures.

Authorized to Work: Must be a citizen of the United States or authorized to work in the United States.

Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

Vision: Having close, far, and peripheral visual acuity to perform a variety of tasks such as make general observations of depth and distance.

Fine Motor Control: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.

English: Ability to speak, read, and comprehend the English language.

Experience

Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Analytics, Operations Management, Data Science, or a related field (Master’s preferred)
  • Three years of experience in operations analytics, business analysis, or data science
  • Proficiency in SQL, Excel, and BI tools (Power BI, Tableau, Qlik)
  • Experience with Python, R, or similar tools for statistical analysis and modeling
Preferred
  • Five years of experience in operations analytics, business analysis, or data science
  • Experience in healthcare, biotech, lab, or supply chain environments
  • Experience with ERP, LIMS, or other operational systems
  • Familiarity with project portfolio management metrics

Education

Required
  • Bachelor's Degree or better in Business Information Systems or related field
Preferred
  • Bachelor's Degree or better in Operations Management or related field
  • Master's Degree or better in Operations Management
