Business Development Representative - Hawaii

Summary

The Business Development Representative (BDR) serves as a key ambassador for the Credit Union within the Northern California region, with a primary focus on building relationships within the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) community. This role is responsible for driving membership growth, strengthening community partnerships, and expanding the Credit Union’s presence through targeted outreach, on-site engagement, and strategic relationship management.

The BDR develops and maintains relationships with union leadership, members, and affiliated organizations while promoting Credit Union products, services, and financial wellness initiatives. This position blends relationship management, field-based outreach, and business development strategy to support sustainable growth and member engagement.

The BDR is based out of the Bay Area Longshoremen’s Memorial Association (BALMA) headquarters and is expected to maintain a consistent on-site presence aligned with business development activities.

Responsibilities and Duties

Business Development & Relationship Management

  • Develop, maintain, and expand relationships with ILWU officials, members, and key community stakeholders
  • Identify and pursue opportunities to grow membership, deposits, loans, and overall product utilization
  • Manage a portfolio of member and business relationships, providing proactive outreach and ongoing engagement
  • Conduct in-person visits, presentations, and outreach activities to promote Credit Union services
  • Serve as a trusted liaison between the Credit Union and the Northern California ILWU community

Field Outreach & Community Engagement

  • Plan and execute on-site promotions, financial literacy workshops, and informational sessions
  • Represent the Credit Union at union meetings, community events, and industry gatherings
  • Coordinate and support public relations efforts, including branch events, grand openings, and community initiatives
  • Maintain a visible and active presence in the field

Sales & Growth Execution

  • Achieve established business development and membership growth goals
  • Identify member needs and recommend appropriate products and services
  • Cross-sell Credit Union offerings and refer opportunities to internal partners (lending, operations, etc.)
  • Track and report on business development activities, pipeline, and outcomes

Strategic Contribution

  • Provide insights and recommendations to leadership on market opportunities, member needs, and service improvements
  • Support regional business development planning and execution
  • Identify trends and opportunities to enhance member experience and profitability

Work Location & Schedule

  • Primary office location: BALMA Headquarters (San Francisco)
  • Required on-site presence at BALMA office a minimum of three (3) days per week
  • Additional on-site days driven by meetings, events, and outreach activities
  • When not in the field, work is performed from the BALMA office

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience in business development, sales, or relationship management within a financial institution (credit union experience preferred)
  • Working knowledge of Credit Union membership eligibility requirements and financial products/services
  • Understanding of marketing, sales, and cross-selling principles
  • Knowledge of applicable regulations related to financial services and advertising

Other Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Reliable transportation with current insurance

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to travel frequently within the assigned region
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings and weekends
  • Ability to stand, walk, and present for extended periods
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally
