EXPECTATIONS AND NATURE OF THE POSITION
Under the direction of supervision, assists in the daily operations of the IS Lab. Provides continuity by assisting students in an individualized, competency-based instructional setting. Also, makes decisions using his/her own discretion when the supervisor is unavailable. Please note: average of 10-15 hours per week; part-time non-benefitted employees may not exceed 80 hours per month.

It is expected that this individual will accomplish assigned duties in an efficient, effective, and competent manner. Strive for improvement and excellence in all work performed. Additionally, this individual must understand the comprehensive role of the community college and work harmoniously with college personnel and the public. This individual must follow all college policies, rules, regulations, and guidelines as they relate to this position.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES FOR WHICH THIS INDIVIDUAL IS ACCOUNTABLE
  • Supports Western students as they use the computers and equipment in the lab. Aids with software questions and general hardware questions. Helps students navigate online services such as MyWestern, Canvas, Online Tutoring and other course technologies.
  • Answers the phone, administers tests, checks out equipment, files papers, and other general office duties
  • Aids Information System students with specific coursework and software projects related to their field of study
  • Assists supervisor and other full-time and part-time instructors with equipment setup, maintenance, and usage. Answers student questions about software and hardware, checking daily assignments, and filing student materials and records. Stays up to date on instructor expectations for particular lab assignments so he/she can answer student questions if instructors are not available.
  • Stays current in knowledge of software programs and equipment being used in the IS Lab. Seeks retraining when necessary as software and equipment are upgraded or changed. This may include working through assignments for various courses taught by IS instructors.
  • Identifies necessary equipment repairs in the IS Lab and informs the supervisor of work orders that have been placed. Stays abreast of the status of current work orders.
  • Prepares the IS Lab prior to each semester and works at the end of the semester to make any necessary changes to the equipment configuration.
  • Installs software, hardware, and runs updates on the machines in the IS lab and elsewhere as needed. Consults and collaborates with Information Technology Services to complete software, hardware, or networking tasks that arise in the lab.
  • Tests software and setup equipment as needed.
  • Assists the supervisor in identifying and ordering needed supplies for the IS Lab.
  • Assists supervisor with purchase requisitions and/or budgeting
  • Administers assessment tests and certification exams when needed.
  • Cross-trains with co-workers in the IS lab to provide full support to the students and instructors in the program.
  • Aides faculty in the HyFlex classroom environment

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • The listing of other duties and responsibilities is meant to be representative, not exhaustive.
  • Maintains safe working conditions and practices at all times.
  • Safeguards institutional physical resources by caring properly for assets assigned and by prohibiting unauthorized use.
  • Cooperates with other Western personnel on various institutional undertakings as necessary.
  • Assists as appropriate in the orientation and general registration endeavors of the college.
  • Maintains an inventory of all assigned equipment and supplies, keeping proper records of supplies and materials as necessary.
  • Assures that confidentiality is safeguarded while handling student records and while cooperating with members of the college community and with the general public.
  • Maintains the IS lab calendar; scheduling classes and tests and coordinating activities.
  • Maintains an appropriate learning environment in the IS lab.
  • Performs general cleaning of the lab, equipment, and kitchen area.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Associates degree in a related area, or
  • Two (2) years experience with a broad spectrum of position-related hardware and software programs

Knowledge of:
  • Hardware troubleshooting, software installation and troubleshooting, networking, hardware recognition, and virtual reality
  • Microsoft Office Programs, e.g. Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, etc.
  • Adobe Programs e.g. Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat, Dreamweaver, etc.
  • Office machines and equipment
  • Telephone techniques, practices, and procedures
  • Comprehensive role of the community college
  • College policies, rules, regulations, and guidelines

Ability to:
  • Offer the highest standard of customer service
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Assist students while standing behind or sitting beside them
  • Maintain effective working relationships with other college employees and students
  • Work closely with other staff members to complete projects such as computer maintenance
  • Train others to complete a procedure
  • Understand the principles and practices of Windows and Apple platforms and related software
  • Work with office machines and equipment
  • See across a large lab
  • Visually monitor the activities in a busy environment
  • Work with databases, desktop publishing, presentation, virtual reality (both use and creation), web-design creation, and integrated packages
  • Work with hardware troubleshooting, software installation and troubleshooting, and networking
  • Provide information to update the IS website
  • Organize processes
  • Proofread and edit accurately
  • Help cover coworkers’ shifts when asked
  • Learn new software and some coding if requested
