Business Intelligence Engineer

Job Summary:

The Business Intelligence Engineer will serve as Medefy’s BI subject matter expert within the Data team. This role owns the discovery, design, development, and governance of Business Intelligence data and processes across the organization.

This position bridges business strategy and technical implementation ensuring that business reporting needs are translated into scalable, secure, and reliable analytics infrastructure.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

1. Business Intelligence Strategy & Requirements

  • Lead discovery sessions with Product, Finance, Care Operations, Sales, and Leadership
  • Translate business questions into structured data requirements
  • Define and standardize data definitions
  • Maintain analytics documentation and metric dictionary
  • Identify data gaps and propose collection strategies

2. Analytics Architecture & Data Storage

  • Own analytics data storage strategy (primarily Snowflake)
  • Design and maintain dimensional models and data marts
  • Determine appropriate data storage across Snowflake, SQL Server, and Postgres
  • Define governance standards for reporting schemas
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA and PHI handling requirements

3. Reporting Platform Ownership

  • Evaluate and select BI tools for internal and external reporting
  • Own BI Embedded architecture
  • Design customer-facing reporting solutions
  • Drive consolidation of reporting into Snowflake as the single source of truth
  • Support and maintain reporting APIs and analytics applications

4. Pipeline Development & Data Movement

  • Build and maintain analytics pipelines using dbt and ELT processes
  • Develop transformations to support reporting use cases
  • Collaborate with Data Engineering on data transport strategy
  • Define instrumentation needs for new product features
  • Support reverse ETL and data sync requirements

5. Data Governance & Security

  • Define role-based access models in Snowflake
  • Reduce over-privileged access and improve audit posture
  • Implement testing and monitoring on analytics models
  • Support Data Reliability Index (DRI) improvement initiatives

6. Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Serve as BI subject matter expert across the organization
  • Guide teams toward self-service analytics best practices
  • Improve analytics literacy across departments
  • Partner with Engineering on event tracking improvements

You must have at least the following:

  • Experience leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning concepts in analytics architecture and reporting, including the ability to evaluate AI-driven tools, incorporate AI-assisted data modeling and insight generation, and strategically apply AI to improve reporting automation, anomaly detection, and decision support across the organization.
    Advanced SQL across Snowflake, SQL Server, and Postgres
  • Strong dimensional modeling experience (star schema, data marts)
  • Experience with dbt and modern ELT/analytics engineering practices
  • Experience designing BI architecture and reporting ecosystems
  • Experience supporting embedded reporting tools
  • Healthcare, claims, eligibility, or HIPAA-compliant data experience preferred
  • Python or scripting experience preferred
  • Strong communication skills and ability to translate business needs into technical solutions

  • Remote Work Environment:
    • This position is performed remotely in a home-office setting.
    • The employee must ensure a quiet, private workspace free from distractions and suitable for video conferencing and focused work.
    • A reliable high-speed internet connection is required.
  • Physical Demands:
    • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer (up to 8+ hours per day).
    • Frequent use of a computer keyboard, mouse, and screen; ability to type at least 55 WPM.
    • Occasional movement within the home office environment (e.g., retrieving office supplies or documents).
    • Vision abilities required include close vision for computer use and reading documentation, with or without corrective lenses.
  • Communication Requirements:
    • Must be able to communicate effectively in English using written and verbal channels (email, chat, video conferencing, phone).
    • Must be able to read and interpret complex written information such as healthcare documentation, performance reports, and company procedures.
    • Must be responsive and present during scheduled working hours and team communications, including virtual meetings and collaboration platforms.

    • Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills with attention to detail.

    • Must maintain a high level of confidentiality and discretion in handling sensitive information.
    • Requires emotional resilience, especially when assisting users in distress or resolving escalated member concerns.
    • Must be able to maintain composure and a professional demeanor under pressure.
  • Work Schedule & Attendance:
    • Must be punctual and dependable.
    • Must maintain regular attendance and meet performance expectations without direct on-site supervision.
