General Description:

The Buyer reports to the Purchasing Manager. The Buyer is primarily responsible for the purchase of direct and indirect supplies and maintenance type items in the most economical manner and in such a way as to support production delivery and quality commitments. This position requires the ability to respond to requests quickly and to multi-task. The position requires proficiency with Material Requirements Planning (MRP) systems in a manufacturing environment.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Procurement of indirect materials (i.e. office supplies, shop supplies and maintenance related items) and direct materials (i.e. raw materials and subcontract services)
  • Manage Material Requirements Planning (MRP)

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor degree in Business Administration or related field, or Associate degree in Business Administration or related field plus two years of Purchasing experience, or High School diploma plus five years of related Purchasing experience.
  • Two years of experience in the following areas is preferred:
    • Purchasing functions for a manufacturing company to include MRP experience
    • Procurement methods and procedures
    • Negotiations for materials and services
    • Use of manufacturing software
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel

Special Tasks and Focus Areas

  • Procurement of indirect materials (i.e. office supplies, shop supplies and maintenance related items) and as necessary direct materials (i.e. raw materials and subcontract services)
    • Provide goods and services that meet specifications and/or requirements
    • Obtain bids as necessary
    • Analyze and make decisions for purchasing using best procurement practices
    • Utilize best transportation methods to minimize costs
    • Process purchase orders and provide clear communication to suppliers
    • Ensure delivery of indirect and direct materials when needed and track order status
    • Negotiate supplier delivery commitments; negotiate and resolve supplier quality issues and receiving discrepancies and supplier returned materials
    • Negotiate supplier pricing and service contracts
    • Establish purchase order methods consistent with excellent production materials support and high inventory turns policy as defined by supervisor
    • Maintain strong relationships with supply base
    • Provide timely and accurate resolution of purchase order and invoice discrepancies
    • As required, pick-up and deliver goods to local businesses
  • Manage Material Requirements Planning (MRP)
    • Review Material Exception Reports and, as required, generate requisitions
    • Make decisions regarding stock levels, and inventory settings
    • Execute and manage purchase orders
    • Maintain accurate supplier information
    • Maintain current purchase order status and reports
    • Regularly update internal customers of status in a proactive manner
    • Maintain minimum buys and maintain reorder points and other key system data to insure accurate order processing
    • Interact with Information Systems to resolve systems problems and make improvements
    • Provide timely and accurate information to production management and provide problem resolution to purchasing issues
    • Utilize buying judgment in balancing pricing and requirements to achieve optimum purchasing
