CAD Drafter / CAD Designer / 3D Modeler – Sheet Metal & Fabrication Design
At Harris Fabrication in Topeka, KS, we design and manufacture industrial steel and stainless steel air filtration equipment, bulk storage systems, and custom ductwork for major industrial suppliers.
We're seeking a CAD Drafter, CAD Designer, or 3D Modeler with strong skills in 3D modeling software (SolidWorks, Solid Edge, Inventor) and hands-on knowledge of sheet metal fabrication, mechanical design, and industrial equipment layouts. If you’re technically inclined and skilled in creating accurate shop drawings, DXF files, and production-ready models, we want you on our team.
Unlike big corporate shops, we run on a family-first culture. You’ll be part of a team where your input matters, your skills are valued, and your career growth is supported.
Key Responsibilities
- Use 3D CAD modeling software (Solid Edge, SolidWorks, Inventor, or similar) to create accurate models and detailed shop drawings for fabrication.
- Interpret customer specifications and turn them into precise mechanical drawings for sheet metal parts, weldments, and assemblies.
- Communicate directly with fabrication and welding teams to ensure drawings translate smoothly to the shop floor.
- Organize, track, and manage both digital and paper shop drawings.
- Generate DXF files for laser cutting and STP files for beam processing.
- Support the sales team with material take-offs, estimating, and project review.
- Contribute to team success by assisting with additional drafting, design, and fabrication-related tasks.
Qualifications & Skills
- High School diploma or GED (required).
- Proficiency in 3D CAD design with Solid Edge, SolidWorks, Inventor (Tekla experience is a plus).
- Previous hands-on sheet metal fabrication or mechanical design experience strongly preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Strong math, geometry, and problem-solving skills.
- Attention to detail and the ability to produce accurate, manufacturable drawings.
- Clear communication skills and a collaborative, team-oriented mindset.
- Ability to work independently, stay organized, and manage multiple deadlines.
- Professional discretion with confidential information.
- A sense of humor—we work hard, but we also value team lunches and the occasional prank to keep things light.
What We Offer
- A fast-paced production environment with challenging and rewarding projects.
- Hands-on collaboration with skilled fabricators, welders, and engineers.
- Career stability with an established company that values technical expertise.
- Competitive pay, health benefits, paid time off, and shift differential.
- A workplace culture built on family values, growth opportunities, and work-life balance.
Why Harris Fabrication?
- Family-first environment – you’ll be treated like a person, not a number.
- Room to advance – whether in CAD, engineering, or shop operations, your growth matters.
