PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENT

The successful new hire or rehired candidate will be responsible to complete and incur the fingerprinting and processing fee of $54.50 through an appropriate fingerprinting vendor and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, within 48 hours of offer acceptance.

RESPONSIBILITIES

SUMMARY Ensures a safe and secure learning environment at the high school by monitoring campus grounds, controlling access, and responding immediately to safety or security incidents, including lockdown and active threat situations. Works collaboratively with School Resource Officers, Armed Patrol, and other members of the large School Safety team. Enforces school rules, addresses disturbances, and documents incidents, all to protect students, staff, and visitors.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.

Monitor school buildings, grounds, parking lots, and surrounding areas through foot patrols, vehicle patrols, assigned security posts, and video surveillance to ensure a safe and secure environment.

Control and monitor access to school property by supervising designated entrances, verifying visitors, restricting unauthorized access, and maintaining a secured building during school hours.

Respond immediately during safety and security emergencies and drills (Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, Shelter) by following established protocols, securing assigned areas, directing students and staff to safety, and maintaining communication with school administration and law enforcement.

Intervene to prevent or stop disturbances, de-escalate confrontational situations, and support a safe environment for students, staff, and visitors.

Observe student behavior and assist school staff in enforcing school rules and the code of conduct; document incidents and behavioral concerns in district-approved systems.

Maintain awareness of students with identified safety, behavioral, or health plans and respond appropriately when concerns arise.

Communicate incidents, concerns, and safety issues to supervisors and, when necessary, law enforcement using radio, telephone, and written reports.

Regulate access to school parking lots by monitoring parking activity, issuing permits and citations in accordance with school guidelines, and maintaining related records.

Issue and maintain records for school identification badges, keys, lockers, and other security-related equipment and access items.

Provide assistance to law enforcement and school administrators as requested and provide statements or testimony when required.

Attend required training and professional development related to school safety, security procedures, emergency response, and student supervision.

Perform other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE: Minimum of 2 years of experience working in an environment responsible for monitoring people, facilities, or activities for safety, security, supervision, or rule compliance. Experience that included directly working with adolescents in a similar capacity preferred.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: High School diploma/GED required. A minimum of one year of course work in the area(s) of criminal justice, sociology, psychology, communications, education, and/or child/youth development preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES & REGISTRATIONS: Juvenile Mental Health CPR/First Aid and CPR/First Aid AED certification highly recommended.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of school safety and security practices including emergency response protocols, access control, campus monitoring, and visitor management. Knowledge of applicable school rules, District policies, and laws related to campus safety. Knowledge of basic report writing, radio communication, and incident documentation procedures. Skilled in observing surroundings and recognizing potential safety or security concerns. Skilled in de-escalating confrontational or emotionally charged situations. Skilled in communicating clearly and effectively with students, staff, visitors, and law enforcement. Ability to remain calm, think clearly, and take appropriate action during emotionally charged situations. Ability to follow established safety protocols precisely. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and visitors. Ability to exercise sound judgment when addressing safety concerns, student behavior, and access control issues.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires frequent walking and standing for extended periods while conducting foot patrols and monitoring assigned areas of the campus. Requires the ability to move quickly across school buildings and grounds, including stairs and uneven surfaces, during routine duties and emergency situations. Requires sufficient strength and mobility to escort individuals and assist with securing areas as needed. Requires adequate vision, hearing, and manual dexterity to observe surroundings, monitor surveillance equipment, communicate effectively, and complete written documentation.

MENTAL FUNCTIONS: Requires sustained situational awareness and the ability to continuously monitor the environment for potential safety and security concerns. Requires the ability to remain calm, think clearly, and make sound decisions during emergencies. Requires attention to detail and the ability to assess rapidly changing circumstances and respond in accordance with established protocols. Requires the ability to manage multiple stimuli and interruptions while maintaining focus on safety priorities.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Primarily working inside and around a high school. Typical secondary school building may also contain classrooms, special education classrooms, offices, libraries, computer labs, science labs, specialized shops, gymnasiums, bathrooms, storage areas, and kitchens. Outside areas include athletic fields, blacktop/concrete areas, parking lots (including student parking), grassy areas, and may have access to open space. Will have access to areas typically secured from most staff and students (e.g. roof tops, boiler rooms, elevator rooms). May need to work additional hours or adjusted schedule to account for athletics & activities events held on campus.
