The Canal Engineer is responsible for planning, designing, supervising, and maintaining canal systems, distributaries, and related hydraulic structures. The role ensures technical accuracy, quality, safety, and cost-effectiveness in the execution of irrigation and water distribution projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and review designs, drawings, BOQs, and technical specifications for canals, distributaries, cross-drainage works, and related structures in accordance with relevant standards.
- Conduct surveys, alignment studies, and hydraulic calculations for canal networks.
- Supervise and monitor canal construction and lining works, ensuring compliance with approved drawings and quality standards.
- Inspect and maintain existing canals, embankments, and regulators; recommend rehabilitation or improvement measures.
- Coordinate with survey, geotechnical, and material testing teams for data collection and validation.
- Prepare method statements, work schedules, and quality assurance plans for canal projects.
- Monitor progress, prepare daily/weekly reports, and escalate risks or deviations to management.
- Support cost estimation, tender documentation, and bid evaluation.
- Liaise with clients, consultants, and contractors to resolve design or execution issues.
- Ensure adherence to environmental, health, and safety requirements at all stages.
Qualifications & Skills
- B.E./B.Tech in Civil Engineering (specialization in Water Resources / Irrigation preferred).
- 3–8 years of experience in design, construction, or maintenance of canals, irrigation systems, or hydraulic structures.
- Good knowledge of hydrology, open channel hydraulics, earthwork, concrete, and lining techniques.
- Proficiency in software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, STAAD.Pro, and MS Office.
- Familiarity with IS, IRC, and other relevant codes and standards.
- Strong analytical, planning, and problem-solving skills.
- Good communication and interpersonal abilities.
