Overview
We are seeking a dynamic Caribbean Arts Visual Arts Teaching Artist to join our Brooklyn Senior Center team. This paid position offers an exciting opportunity to inspire and engage older adults through vibrant Caribbean cultural expressions and visual arts. As a Teaching Artist, you will design and deliver culturally rich, interactive art programs that celebrate Caribbean heritage, foster creativity, and promote community connection. Your enthusiasm and expertise will help participants explore their artistic talents while learning about Caribbean history, traditions, and contemporary art forms.
Duties
- Develop engaging curriculum that incorporates Caribbean cultural themes, visual arts techniques, and community storytelling.
- Lead hands-on art classes in various mediums such as painting, drawing, collage, or mixed media tailored for diverse skill levels.
- Incorporate elements of Caribbean dance, theater, photography, sewing, culinary arts, or other cultural practices into creative projects to enrich participant experiences.
- Manage classroom environments with positive behavior management strategies to ensure a welcoming and inclusive space for all participants.
- Adapt lessons for individuals with special needs or early childhood education requirements, ensuring accessibility and participation for everyone.
- Foster a supportive environment that encourages self-expression, cultural pride, and social interaction among seniors.
- Collaborate with center staff to plan special events or exhibitions showcasing participants’ artwork celebrating Caribbean heritage.
- Complete all required lesson plans, reports, and unit plans.
Qualifications
- Proven experience in visual arts instruction with a strong understanding of Caribbean cultural arts or related disciplines such as theater, dance, photography, sewing, or culinary arts.
- Demonstrated ability to develop curriculum that is culturally relevant and age-appropriate for senior participants.
- Classroom management skills combined with patience and enthusiasm for working with older adults and diverse learners.
- Experience in tutoring or teaching children or adults in settings such as community centers, schools, or specialized education programs.
- Knowledge of childhood development principles and early childhood education is a plus for working with preschool or early learners within the community context.
- Familiarity with behavior management techniques and creating inclusive environments that support special education needs.
- Strong organizational skills for lesson planning and adapting activities to various skill levels while maintaining engagement.
