Key Responsibilities
- Read & Interpret Plans: Study blueprints, sketches, and building plans to determine project layouts and material needs.
- Measure & Cut: Accurately measure, cut, shape, and smooth lumber and other materials (steel, composites).
- Construct & Install: Build frameworks (walls, floors, roofs), install cabinets, shelves, doors, windows, and other fixtures, often using levels and laser levels.
- Repair & Maintain: Remove and replace damaged parts, inspect structures, and perform general maintenance on wooden fixtures.
- Erect Structures: Assemble scaffolding, shoring, and other temporary supports.
- Ensure Safety: Follow all safety rules and regulations (like OSHA), maintain a clean work area, and use personal protective equipment (PPE).
Essential Skills & Requirements
- Technical Skills: Proficiency with hand tools (saws, hammers, chisels) and power tools (nail guns, sanders).
- Math Skills: Strong understanding of basic math and trigonometry for measurements and calculations.
- Physical Ability: Stamina to stand, lift heavy materials (up to 100 lbs), climb, and work in various conditions.
- Attention to Detail: Precision is crucial for accurate cuts and installations.
- Problem-Solving: Ability to make adjustments and modifications on-site.
- Teamwork: Good communication and interpersonal skills to work with others.
Typical Work Environment
- Indoors and outdoors, on construction sites, in workshops, or client homes.
- May involve cramped spaces, heights (scaffolding), and heavy lifting.
