A carpenter builds, installs, and repairs structures and fixtures using wood and other materials, following blueprints to create everything from building frameworks (walls, floors) to custom cabinets and molding, requiring skills in measuring, cutting, fitting, and using various hand/power tools, while ensuring safety and adherence to building codes. Key Responsibilities
- Blueprint Interpretation: Read and understand building plans and technical drawings.
- Material Preparation: Measure, cut, shape, and join wood and other materials (plastic, drywall).
- Construction & Installation: Assemble and install frameworks, walls, floors, doorframes, windows, roofing, cabinets, and stairs.
- Finishing: Install fixtures like handles, locks, hinges, and molding.
- Repair & Maintenance: Conduct repairs on existing structures and fixtures.
- Site Management: Source materials, provide estimates, ensure compliance with safety regulations, and maintain tools.
Essential Skills & Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of building materials, tools, and construction techniques.
- Excellent manual dexterity and physical stamina (lifting, standing).
- Good math, measurement, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Often requires a high school diploma and/or completion of an apprenticeship/vocational training.
