JOB SUMMARY: Performs a variety of cashiering duties related to the receiving, recording, and custody of monies and checks. Deposits various monies or checks and reconciles Collections accounts. Performs a daily balance reconciliation of monies and checks received. TYPICAL DUTIES: Receives payments of general and delinquent taxes levied on real estate property. Examines delinquent tax bills to ascertain that interest has been added. Refers taxpayers to proper offices or personnel when needed. Enters and records tax amounts, interest paid, type of payment (check, money order, or cash), tax year, and other pertinent data. Receives cash, checks, and money orders collected together with register tapes or other papers covering records of transactions. Counts receipts and compares with cashiering records to balance; takes necessary actions supporting records. Enters receipts in ledgers or other accounting records, balances entry totals against receipt totals, and turns receipts over to appropriate offices or personnel for subsequent processing. May prepare monthly or other periodic reports of collections made. Receives and processes payments for a variety of funds payable to Cook County. When necessary, will assist with processing Name and Address Changes and Indexing payment coupons in the Chase Receivables Edge System. Reviews daily deposits with Vault supervisor to ensure deposits balance. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A minimum of one (1) year of experience in cashiering or work-related experience. High school diploma or equivalent; college degree preferred. Computer literacy and the ability to utilize software that may apply to the position and its duties. Knowledge of Microsoft Office with a strong proficiency in Word and Excel. Must be proficient in both written and spoken Spanish. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Must demonstrate the ability to maintain general cash funds, reconcile, and balance incoming deposits, transactions, and payments. Attention to handling any cashiering problems that may arise. Good interpersonal relationship skills. Excellent communication skills and the ability to convey information clearly and concisely. Must demonstrate the ability to be tactful and exercise diplomacy in speaking to a diverse range of individuals about various situations. A high level of accuracy and proficiency in the use of computerized programs. Knowledge of good office management principles.
