CDL Class A Hazmat Relief Driver – Locomotive Fueling & Locomotive Service Technician

This combined position covers both:

  • Locomotive Fueling Relief Driver
  • Locomotive Service Technician Relief

You will travel extensively and support multiple sites, ensuring uninterrupted service for our railroad partners.

Position Overview: What a Relief Driver & Service Tech Does

This hybrid role provides critical coverage when local drivers or service techs are on vacation or when open shifts need to be filled. Travel is constant and schedules vary by location. Flexibility is essential.

You will:

  • Fuel and service locomotives
  • Perform locomotive inspections and basic maintenance
  • Assist with general facility duties
  • Fill in across multiple states and locations as needed
  • Work overnights, weekends, and holidays depending on assignment

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys change, independence, and high earning potential.

Position Highlights

  • Travel Required: 75%–100%
    • Paid travel time + hotel + car + per diem + fuel
  • Compensation: Hourly + travel pay
    • Most committed Relief Drivers earn well over $125,000+ annually
  • Schedule: Rotating and variable shifts
    • Many locations operate 12‑hour shifts
  • Overtime: After 40 hours
  • Pay Frequency: Paid weekly

Responsibilities

Locomotive Fueling

  • Load, transport, and transfer red dyed diesel in tractor and full length tanker to locomotives
  • Fuel locomotives safely and efficiently on an on call basis during your shifts
  • Complete fueling logs and diesel accounting paperwork

Locomotive Service Technician Duties

Responsibilities
  • Conduct Locomotive Daily Inspection
  • Perform scheduled or on-demand maintenance of locomotives
  • Interest in being cross-trained on all functions at the facility
  • Willingness to follow procedures
  • Keep work area clean
  • Not afraid to ask questions
  • Accurately fill out all necessary paperwork
  • Enforces safety policies and procedures with other employees.
  • Ability to perform general maintenance on equipment
  • Assist with handyman duties within the facility including general maintenance
  • Interact with other team members, customers, railroad crews, and visitors.
  • Understands customer’s needs.

Requirements & Qualifications

Licensing

  • Valid Class A CDL
  • Hazmat (H) and Tanker (N/X) endorsements
  • TWIC card required

Experience

  • 1 year verifiable tractor-trailer experience

Background & Compliance

  • Must pass all company, customer, and federal background checks
  • Must not be prohibited under FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse
  • Valid DOT medical card
  • Clean MVR (no major violations)

Skills

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Moderate computer skills
  • Reliable, safety-focused, and willing to travel
  • Railroad or FRA experience a plus
  • Mechanically inclined

Physical Requirements

  • Bend, stoop, kneel, climb on/off elevated surfaces
  • Climb into/out of truck cabs & locomotives multiple times daily
  • Walk long distances on uneven surfaces
  • Lift/carry up to 50 lbs frequently
  • Work outside in all weather conditions
  • Work with non-hazardous liquid & dry bulk materials
