POSITION SUMMARY:

The Certified Medical Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting the provider team with patient care procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

1. Welcome and escort patient from waiting room to appropriate examination room.

2. Obtain patient vital signs and note in chart, including statistical data required to meet grant reporting needs.

3. Assist provider, as necessary, with patient care and, at provider’s direction:

o Obtain specimens, e.g., blood draws, finger sticks, pregnancy tests, urine dips, etc.

o Set up and obtain EKG.

o Administer immunizations.

o Prepare materials to expedite delivery of patient care.

4. Call patients with results of medical tests.

5. Prepare specimens for pick-up by appropriate lab.

6. Provide patient counseling on specific topics, as directed.

7. Scan medical record documentation, screenings, and test results into EMR, as needed.

8. Sterilize and prepare examination room for next patient, as needed.

9. Ensure examination rooms are stocked with sufficient supplies for the day and report deficiencies to supervisor.

10. Enter vaccine data into CHIRP registry.

11. Maintain temperature control logs for refrigerators and freezers and perform control testing on lab equipment.

12. Bilingual MAs may provide interpretation services for patients and providers.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

· High school diploma or GED required

· Medical assistant certification required within 90 days of hire

· Minimum six (6) months’ medical assistant experience, in clinic or outpatient environment preferred

· Experience with Electronic Medical Records (EMR) database, e.g., eClinicalWorks (eCW), preferred

· Bilingual – English/Spanish, preferred

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITY AND WORK DIFFICULTY:

· Utilize critical thinking skills.

· Provide health care in a sensitive, nonjudgmental manner to persons of all economic levels and cultural backgrounds.

· Be knowledgeable about medical office practices, procedures, and equipment.

· Assist with recognizing the needs and concerns of people within their cultural framework.

· Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

· Possess excellent interpersonal skills.
