MEDICAL ASSISTANT - ONCOLOGY

The Medical Assistant is a specially trained individual who demonstrates expertise in assisting patients during all aspects of care. The Medical Assistant will maintains efficient patient flow, assists with patient care, and performs administrative and certain clinical duties under the direction of the Nurse, Clinic Manager, NP or Physician.

General Responsibilities.

· Maintain open channels of communication and information sharing among co-workers, physicians, and owners; collaborate with others in ensuring a high quality of patient care.

· Work effectively as a team member.

· Treat patients with compassion and dignity, addressing as appropriate both physical and emotional needs.

· Seek opportunities through continuing education to maintain skill, knowledge, and required certifications.

· Knowledge of medical terminology, clinical medicine, hematology, and oncology.

· Skills in general medical assistant tasks, i.e., vital signs, documentation requirements, and preparation of medical records.

· Assist clinical team with administrative tasks such as obtaining medical records, scheduling referrals, obtaining authorizations, etc.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Escort patients to and from exam rooms and treatment room as appropriate.
  • Obtain all necessary patient records as required by physician and assure appropriate consent has been obtained prior to treatment or procedure.
  • Record patient data prior to each physician visit, including but not limited to, vital signs, height, weight, allergies, and medication changes.
  • Prepare and stocks exam rooms and orders supplies as needed.
  • Assist physicians with exams and procedures as requested.
  • Obtain blood specimens from peripheral sites as needed and in accordance with OSHA and universal precautions.
  • Answer patient telephone calls for referral to physician or appropriate clinical staff.
  • Phone in prescriptions and make other patient calls as required by physicians.
  • Schedule patient test, procedures and hospital admissions and provides follow-up to patients regarding test results. Reports all critical values to physician immediately.
  • Arrange for pre-authorizations and pre-certifications as needed. Follow up patient reschedules and no shows with physicians.
  • Obtain new patient records and previous test results, x-rays, scans, etc.
  • Assist with handling specimens for procedures that are referred to outside laboratories, including proper identifications of specimens and tracking of results.
  • Accurately charges the encounter form for laboratory work performed.
  • Assist with the processing of blood products and patient information. Prepares requisitions for tests ordered, processes specimens, and obtains laboratory and patient reports as requested by physicians. Review lab results and notifies physicians of abnormal results.
  • Perform other administrative duties, i.e., scribing visit notes, filing, faxing, printing, etc., as requested by supervisor or physician.
  • Maintain confidentially of all information related to patients and medical staff.
  • Other duties as directed.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $18.00 - $20.00 per hour
