Certified Medical Assistant (CMA)

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Certified Medical Assistant reports to the Director of Clinical Services. This position works effectively with the Provider(s), clinic team, and Behavioral Health team to ensure that the Cempa mission, goals, and performance standards for the clinic are met. The Certified Medical Assistant is responsible for patient care, assisting providers, specimen collection, appointment scheduling, and other duties necessary to provide comprehensive patient care and a safe environment for the patients and staff. Duties, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time, with or without notice.

Education and Experience Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have achieved CMA certification through the Certifying Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) or NHA/RMA.
  • Two+ years of experience as CMA.

Education and Experience Preferences

  • Experience working in a clinic that provides primary care is preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • BLS- Basic Life Support (Required)
  • Bilingual (Preferred but not Required)
  • Any additional certifications would be helpful and preferred.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES (includes, but not limited to):

Administrative

  • Documents all procedures in the patient’s medical record.
  • Updates CareWare to ensure information is accurate in relation to office visits, etc.
  • Attends and gives input at clinical and organization staff meetings.
  • Assists with developing and implementing a higher level of continuity of care for clinic and behavioral health-managed clients by obtaining records and managing medical release of information during office visits.
  • Updates and maintains the digital patient records by scanning and filing hard copy patient documents into the EMR.

Clinic

  • Responsible for greeting patients (in person or via telephone), addressing questions related to medical care and referral inquiries, and triaging patients in a warm and friendly atmosphere, maintaining a service level of excellence.
  • Prepares patients for the health care visit by directing and accompanying them to the examination room, providing examination gowns and drapes when necessary, helping them to position themselves for the examination and/or treatment, and arranging examination room instruments, supplies, and equipment for examination/procedure.
  • Maintain the patient’s electronic medical record through the proper triaging process, which includes confirming the purpose of the visit, taking vital signs, and recording/reviewing medical history and medication list, surgeries, hospitalization, allergies, health maintenance, and social history.
  • Communicate the patient’s needs with the Primary Care Provider(s).
  • Provide counseling to patients on health-related topics, medication education, dosage, and/or procedural instructions and answer any medical-related questions.
  • Maintaining patient confidence in the clinic and protecting clinical operations by keeping patient care information confidential.
  • Administer recommended immunizations based on CDC guidelines.
  • Assist Provider during testing, examination, and/or procedure(s) and complete the medical record by recording results and treatment plan as directed by the Provider.
  • Perform in-house labs when needed. Completes quality assurance testing and lab logs.
  • Clean and prepare examination rooms prior to patient appointments.
  • Able to assist patients in medication management, pillbox regimens, and dispensing/administering medication from inventory as directed by the provider.
  • Maintains a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following and enforcing OSHA standards and procedures and complying with legal regulations.
  • Reports Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and/or treatment for those infections to the appropriate Health Department.
  • Serves and protects the health care provider and practice by adhering to professional standards, policies and procedures, and federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Provide additional areas of support to the clinic at times when patient volume is high and maintain effectiveness and efficiency under time constraints and demanding situations.
  • Assists medical providers, co-workers, and partnering agencies in delivering high-quality Infectious Disease care, HIV care, and Primary care services.
