Certified Medical Coder – Birmingham, AL
MainStreet Family Care operates more than 60 fast-growing urgent care clinics across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina. As we continue expanding access to high-quality healthcare in rural communities throughout the Southeastern United States, we are seeking a Certified Medical Coder to support accurate and compliant coding across our clinics.
This role plays an important part in ensuring clinical documentation is translated into accurate billing codes that support timely reimbursement and regulatory compliance. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, organized, and comfortable working independently in a remote environment while collaborating with internal teams.
This is a full-time hybrid position. The selected candidate will work remotely most of the week and report to our corporate office in downtown Birmingham once per week for collaboration and team alignment.
Key Responsibilities
•
Review clinical documentation and assign appropriate ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes
•
Ensure coding accuracy and compliance with payer guidelines and company policies
•
Identify documentation gaps and request clarification when needed
•
Conduct occasional internal reviews of coded charts to ensure consistency with coding guidelines
•
Assist with resolving coding-related claim edits, denials, or payer inquiries
•
Maintain knowledge of current coding guidelines, payer policies, and regulatory updates
•
Work within our EHR (updating codes and charges directly within the EHR system)
•
Collaborate with billing and clinical teams to support efficient revenue cycle operations
Qualifications
•
Active certification as a Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or equivalent credential
•
Strong understanding of medical terminology and coding principles
•
Urgent care coding experience preferred but not required
•
Strong attention to detail and analytical skills
•
Ability to work independently in a remote environment while maintaining productivity and accuracy
•
Strong communication and organizational skills
Work Location
This is a full-time hybrid role. The Certified Medical Coder will work remotely and report to our downtown Birmingham office once per week.
