The School Nurse promotes and protects the health, safety, and well-being of students and staff. This role includes providing direct nursing care, managing chronic health conditions, responding to emergencies, and supporting a healthy school environment. The School Nurse serves as a liaison between the school, families, healthcare providers, and community agencies.
Key Responsibilities1. Clinical Care
- Provide first aid and urgent care for illness or injury.
- Assess student health needs and implement appropriate interventions.
- Administer medications and treatments in accordance with physician orders and school policies.
- Manage chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes, allergies, and seizures.
- Maintain health equipment, supplies, and emergency kits.
2. Health Management & Compliance
- Maintain accurate, confidential health records for all students.
- Monitor and ensure compliance with immunization and health-screening requirements.
- Develop and update Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs) and Emergency Action Plans (EAPs).
- Participate in IEP (Individualized Education Program) and 504 planning as needed.
3. Health Education & Promotion
- Educate students, staff, and families on disease prevention, hygiene, nutrition, and wellness.
- Promote healthy behaviors through classroom presentations or school-wide programs.
- Collaborate with staff to support physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
4. Emergency Preparedness
- Respond to medical emergencies and activate emergency medical services as needed.
- Train school staff in CPR, first aid, and use of emergency medications such as EpiPens.
- Assist in developing safety protocols for medical incidents, pandemics, or environmental hazards.
5. Communication & Collaboration
- Serve as a liaison between families, school staff, administrators, and healthcare providers.
- Communicate health concerns that may impact learning or classroom performance.
- Provide guidance to parents on accessing healthcare resources.
6. Public Health & Infection Control
- Monitor and manage communicable diseases within the school.
- Implement infection-control measures and advise on exclusion and return-to-school policies.
- Participate in school-wide health audits and emergency drills.
Qualifications Required
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license (or LPN if state permits).
- CPR/First Aid certification.
- Knowledge of pediatric health, public health principles, and school health regulations.
Preferred
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
- School Nurse Services Credential (if required by the state).
- Experience in pediatric, community health, or school nursing.
