Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) to join our structural steel operations team. The CWI will be responsible for inspecting structural steel fabrication and welding activities to ensure compliance with project specifications, AWS standards, safety regulations, and quality requirements. This role plays a critical part in maintaining the integrity, safety, and quality of fabricated steel products used in commercial, industrial, and infrastructure projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform visual and dimensional inspections of structural steel fabrication and welding processes
- Inspect welds in accordance with AWS D1.1 and project-specific codes and standards
- Review welding procedures (WPS), procedure qualification records (PQR), and welder qualifications
- Verify material traceability, fit-up, joint preparation, and weld quality before, during, and after welding
- Coordinate and document non-destructive testing (NDT) activities when required
- Identify weld discontinuities, defects, and non-conformance issues and ensure corrective actions are implemented
- Maintain inspection reports, quality documentation, and compliance records accurately and timely
- Work closely with fabrication supervisors, project managers, and quality teams to ensure production quality and schedule adherence
- Conduct audits of fabrication processes, equipment calibration, and quality control procedures
- Ensure compliance with OSHA safety standards and company quality policies
- Participate in client inspections and third-party audits as needed
- Assist in continuous improvement initiatives related to welding quality and fabrication efficiency
Qualifications
- Current AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification required
- High school diploma or GED required; technical degree or welding/fabrication training preferred
- 3+ years of experience in structural steel fabrication and welding inspection preferred
- Strong knowledge of AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code – Steel
- Ability to read and interpret structural drawings, blueprints, weld symbols, and specifications
- Experience with FCAW, SMAW, GMAW, and SAW welding processes
- Familiarity with AISC standards and structural steel fabrication procedures
- Understanding of NDT methods including UT, MT, and PT preferred
- Proficient with inspection documentation and reporting
- Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work in fabrication shop and field environments
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and climb for extended periods
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally
- Comfortable working in industrial fabrication shop environments and outdoor job sites
- Ability to perform visual inspections in varying lighting and environmental conditions
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in bridge, commercial, or industrial structural steel projects
- Knowledge of ISO quality systems and fabrication QA/QC programs
- NDT certifications are a plus
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification preferred
Pay: $28.42 - $32.22 per hour
