- Recruitment and Staffing: Identifying, sourcing, and recruiting qualified officers and ratings specifically for tanker operations. This includes verifying the authenticity and validity of all licenses, certifications, and documentation.
- Training and Development: Coordinating mandatory training programs (e.g., STCW, tanker-specific safety courses) and ongoing professional development to ensure the crew possesses the necessary skills for safe and efficient operations.
- Compliance Management: Ensuring all crew operations adhere to international maritime laws and standards, including the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC), SOLAS, MARPOL, and the ISM Code.
- Crew Deployment and Scheduling: Managing crew rotations, sign-on/sign-off logistics, and scheduling to ensure optimal manning levels and compliance with work/rest hour regulations.
- Payroll and Budget Management: Administering crew payroll, benefits, and insurance schemes, as well as managing crew-related budgets, including travel and training costs.
- Welfare and Well-being: Addressing the physical and mental well-being of seafarers, providing support for living conditions, medical care, and family matters.
- Performance and Discipline: Conducting performance evaluations, identifying skill gaps, and managing disciplinary actions or conflict resolution as required.
- Documentation and Reporting: Maintaining accurate and accessible electronic databases and personnel records for all crew members, facilitating audits and inspections.
Necessary Skills and Qualifications
- Experience: Typically 5-8 years of professional experience in crew management, maritime HR, or ship management, often with prior sea-going experience as a senior officer on a vessel.
- Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of international maritime regulations, industry best practices, and the specific vetting requirements for the oil and chemical tanker trade.
- Soft Skills: Strong leadership, team management, communication, and crisis management skills are essential for the role.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency with crew management software (e.g., CrewManager, ShipManager) and data analysis tools.
