Chai Barista (Chaiwallah)

Located in the vibrant East Village of Manhattan, Kolkata Chai Cafe brings together the energy of New York City with the personality and values of Kolkata. From our signature oat milk masala chai to our classic egg rolls we’ve curated a menu for the worldly and curious in an unstuffy but hip atmosphere.

As a KCC Chaiwallah, you will:

• Deliver impeccable hospitality to our guests and your fellow teammates, by taking orders and serving them accordingly
• Make our signature chai using in-house recipes and training
• Assist with all prep work including cutting vegetables, grinding spices, accepting and organizing product shipments, cleaning up
• Expedite and serve delicious variety of food and beverages on our menu - this can include assembly, delivery and clearing of these food items
• Support your team in keeping the cafe running smoothly and beautifully - these tasks include clearing dishes, sweeping, dusting, mopping, cleaning and organizing condiment station, and taking out trash

You are:

• Passionate about chai, coffee and understand the company’s larger vision and goal
• A professional–you are serious about the work you put forth and care about doing a good job
• Reliable and consistent - your manager and teammates can always depend on you to be punctual, looking sharp and bringing your A game
• Someone who holds themselves to a high-standard when it comes to product quality and details
• Eligible to work in the United States and are 18 years of age or older
• Not only do you provide impeccable customer service, but you are also adept at kitchen work and comfortable with pots/knives & making recipes with precision

You are expected to:

• Already have your Food Handler's Certification or obtain certification within 30 days post-hire
• Use basic math and computer skills (weighing ingredients for recipes, taking inventory, etc)
• Have a flexible schedule to work weekdays to begin, and availability to work weekends in the near future

Our chaiwallah position is a dynamic one! Below we’ve mapped out the physical demands that are essential to the role:

• Stand/walk for long periods of time. On feet majority of the day (standing behind bar, making chai, or walking the cafe floor)
• Use of hands to reach, grip, turn and perform precision work to make/pour chai, operate register, etc
• Squat/bend/twist/reach for items below waist level or above shoulders. Reaching to higher shelves for item, placing packages on ground, etc
• Push/pull/carry/move up to 25 pounds when handling bags of tea, coffee beans, coffee kegs, crates of milk, tub of dishes and trash bins, ice bucket
• Climb ladders, spiral stairs, ramps and uneven floor and/or surfaces. Retrieving supplies from basement, etc
• Use of senses of smell/taste to ensure overall product quality and control
• Listen/speak in order to effectively communicate with team and create an excellent experience for the customer. Answer questions about menu, listen to instructions, etc.
