Chehalis-TOSA Social Emotional Behavior Specialist (Elementary) 2025/26

Position Summary:

The Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA) for Social Emotional and Behavioral Support provides targeted support to elementary students experiencing social, emotional, and behavioral challenges that interfere with classroom learning and participation. The TOSA works collaboratively with classroom teachers, special education staff, counselors, and administrators to develop and implement strategies that help students build prosocial skills and successfully return to and thrive in the general education environment.

This position focuses on solution-oriented interventions delivered through individual and small-group instruction, coaching, and collaborative problem-solving with staff. The role includes direct behavior support and intervention, data collection, development of behavior plans in partnership with classroom teachers and case managers, and professional development and support for staff. The TOSA supports the development of a positive school climate by modeling effective behavioral practices and helping staff implement proactive supports.

Performance Responsibilities:

Student Support and Intervention:

  • Provide direct instruction to students in 1:1 and small group settings to teach social-emotional and behavioral skills.
  • Support students experiencing behavioral escalation or difficulty regulating emotions in order to help them de-escalate and successfully return to class.
  • Teach and reinforce prosocial behaviors, self-regulation strategies, and problem-solving skills.
  • Implement evidence-based social-emotional learning and behavioral interventions.
  • Monitor student progress and adjust interventions based on data and team feedback.

Collaboration and Consultation:

  • Work closely with general education teachers, special education teachers, and support staff to identify student needs and develop intervention strategies.
  • Participate in child assessment team meetings, behavior team meetings, and problem-solving discussions.
  • Collaborate with school counselors, school psychologists, special education case managers, and administrators to coordinate services and support plans.
  • Support staff in implementing consistent behavioral expectations and strategies across school settings.

Coaching and Capacity Building:

  • Model effective classroom strategies that support positive behavior and emotional regulation.
  • Provide coaching and consultation to teachers regarding behavior management and social-emotional supports.
  • Help staff implement proactive strategies that prevent escalation and promote positive student engagement.

Data and Documentation:

  • Collect and review data related to student behavior, intervention effectiveness, and progress toward goals.
  • Assist teams in identifying patterns and developing targeted solutions.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation of student supports and interventions.

Program Support:

  • Support schoolwide behavioral and social-emotional approaches.
  • Assist administrators in responding to behavioral concerns and developing appropriate responses that prioritize student learning and reintegration into the classroom.
  • Contribute to a positive and welcoming school culture that supports the success of all students.

Qualifications:

  • Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate with an Endorsement in General and Special Education
  • First Aid/CPR Right Response Trained
  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background clearance
  • Skills to motivate students, communicate with individuals from varied educational and cultural backgrounds, direct support personnel, evaluate performance
  • Demonstrated successful experience in implementing a prescribed curriculum
  • Demonstrated evidence of classroom management skills
  • Experience and/or training with cultural, ethnic and language diversity preferred
  • Experience with PBIS, MTSS, Restorative Practices, or trauma-informed practices.
  • Knowledge of age appropriate teaching methods, state curriculum framework, education code
  • Demonstrated willingness and ability to work cooperatively with administration and staff
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to use computer technology to assist instruction
  • Prior job related experience required
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable

Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required:

  • Skills to promote learning, motivate students, communicate with individuals from varied educational and cultural backgrounds, and evaluate performance.
  • Knowledge of curriculum, education code, and district policies. Knowledge of effective behavioral intervention strategies
  • Abilities to remain calm and supportive in challenging situations.
  • Abilities to stand and walk for prolonged periods, perform a variety of specialized and responsible tasks, maintain records, establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, parents, other school personnel, meet schedule and deadlines. Significant physical abilities may include lifting/carrying 25 lbs, reaching/handling, talking/hearing conversations, near/far visual acuity/depth perception/accommodation/field of vision.

Compensation and Benefits:
