Chemical Dependency Counselor/Peer Supporter

Duties

  • Conduct comprehensive patient assessments to evaluate addiction severity, mental health status, and overall treatment needs using clinical counseling techniques.
  • Deliver individual and group counseling sessions employing evidence-based practices such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, and behavioral therapy to facilitate recovery.
  • Provide peer support by sharing lived experience insights, fostering trust, and encouraging engagement in treatment plans.
  • Manage crisis situations effectively through crisis intervention strategies, ensuring patient safety and stabilization.
  • Document all patient interactions accurately in medical records following HIPAA guidelines and medical documentation standards.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop personalized case management plans that include social work, family counseling, and community care resources.
  • Assist with intake procedures, diagnostic evaluations, and treatment planning while maintaining compliance with ICD coding (ICD-9/10) for accurate diagnosis documentation.
  • Support patients in navigating addiction counseling services, mental health care options, and recovery programs within hospital or community settings.

Experience

  • Proven experience in addiction counseling or behavioral health settings with familiarity in psychotherapy, crisis management, and patient care.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, medical records management, and HIPAA regulations to ensure confidentiality and compliance.
  • Hands-on experience with group therapy facilitation, social work practices, and applied behavior analysis techniques.
  • Skilled in conducting diagnostic evaluations using ICD coding systems (ICD-9/10) for accurate clinical documentation.
  • Background in home & community care environments or hospital settings preferred; experience with PTSD care is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of mental health counseling modalities including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), behavior management, and case management strategies.
