Chemical Engineer

We are seeking a collaborative, detail‑oriented, and safety‑focused chemical engineer to support laboratory, pilot, and light production operations. The successful candidate will partner with R&D, operations, quality, suppliers, and regulatory stakeholders to design, optimize, and scale chemical processes that deliver safe, cost‑effective, and reproducible products. This role requires strong systems thinking, hands‑on process engineering experience, excellent communication, and a commitment to continuous improvement and operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, evaluate, and optimize chemical processes and unit operations across lab, pilot, and light production scales, including reaction engineering, separations, heat and mass transfer, and material handling.

  • Develop and execute scale‑up strategies, pilot plans, and process transfer activities to ensure safe, robust, and reproducible manufacturing transitions from lab to pilot and production.

  • Collaborate with R&D, QA/QC, and operations to define process requirements, acceptance criteria, and control strategies that support product quality and manufacturability.

  • Lead process hazard analyses, risk assessments (e.g., HAZOP, FMEA), and implement engineering controls, safeguards, and operating procedures to mitigate risks and ensure safe operations.

  • Develop, validate, and maintain process documentation including process flow diagrams (PFDs), piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), standard operating procedures (SOPs), batch records, and process descriptions.

  • Design and oversee experiments for process characterization, parameter studies, and robustness testing; analyze data using statistical methods and present findings and recommendations to stakeholders.

  • Support equipment selection, specification, procurement, installation, and qualification (IQ/OQ/PQ) activities in coordination with engineering and operations teams.

  • Provide technical support for production troubleshooting, root cause investigations, and corrective/preventive actions (CAPA) to resolve process deviations and improve yield and reliability.

  • Implement process control strategies, sampling plans, and monitoring approaches to maintain process stability and ensure consistent product performance.

  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma) to reduce waste, improve throughput, and lower cost of goods while maintaining safety and quality standards.

  • Work with suppliers and internal teams to ensure material specifications, handling, and storage support process needs and product integrity.

  • Train and mentor technicians, operators, and early‑career engineers on process fundamentals, safe operating practices, and experimental techniques.

  • Support regulatory and compliance activities by providing technical input for submissions, process descriptions, and responses to inspections when applicable.

Required Qualifications - Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering or a closely related engineering/science discipline, or equivalent professional experience.

  • 3+ years of progressive process engineering experience in laboratory, pilot, or light industrial environments with hands‑on work in reaction, separation, or process scale‑up activities.

  • Practical experience with process design tools and documentation (PFDs, P&IDs, mass/energy balances) and familiarity with equipment common to chemical processing (reactors, distillation, filtration, heat exchangers, pumps).

  • Demonstrated experience in process characterization, scale‑up, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis using structured problem‑solving methods (e.g., 8D, 5‑why).

  • Working knowledge of process safety principles, risk assessment techniques (HAZOP, LOPA), and regulatory requirements applicable to lab and pilot operations.

  • Strong analytical and data analysis skills with experience using statistical tools, design of experiments (DOE), and process modeling or simulation software.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills: able to prepare clear technical documentation, present data and recommendations to cross‑functional teams, and support decision making.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment, collaborate across disciplines, and maintain attention to detail while delivering results.

  • Proficiency with engineering and lab software (e.g., process simulation, data analysis tools, electronic lab notebooks, document control systems) and competency with ticketing/work‑order systems.

Preferred Qualifications - Domain & Tools

  • Advanced degree (MS/PhD) in Chemical Engineering or related discipline or relevant professional certifications (e.g., PE, Six Sigma) is a plus.

  • Experience with pilot plant operation, equipment commissioning, and scale‑up of complex chemistries, including handling of hazardous or sensitive materials.

  • Familiarity with statistical process control (SPC), DOE, FMEA, and other reliability/continuous improvement methodologies.

  • Experience with process safety management systems, environmental controls, and regulatory compliance in a laboratory or pilot manufacturing context.

  • Hands‑on experience with automation, process control systems (DCS/PLC), or lab instrumentation preferred.

Work Environment & Compensation
  • Full‑time position within an interdisciplinary engineering, R&D, and operations organization; role combines office‑based engineering work with regular hands‑on lab and pilot area activities.

  • Competitive salary and benefits package commensurate with experience, including health coverage, retirement plan options, paid time off, and professional development support.

  • Opportunities for training, certifications, conference participation, and career growth within a diverse, inclusive, and safety‑focused workplace.

  • We are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion and foster a respectful work environment that supports work‑life balance and employee well‑being.
