Overview
Under general direction, perform and/or supervise the performance of various inorganic and organic, chemical analysis, physical and biological analyses. Performs laboratory work of moderate difficulty in analyzing and testing samples related to wastewater, bio solids, ash and other materials encountered in the wastewater treatment process, or air, water, and land pollution.
Essential Functions

Conducts and/or oversees technicians in the performance of regular and special chemical, biological and physical analyses of treatment plant discharges, industrial wastes and natural watercourses

Operates and calibrates various laboratory instrumentation including gas chromatograph mass spectrometer, atomic absorption spectrophotometer, and other analytical systems

Evaluates test results for conformance with accepted procedures

Utilizes a laboratory information management system to record, transmit and document test results

Conducts various biological tests to evaluate toxicity

Trains technicians in the proper use of equipment and test performance

Collects data to evaluate technician performance using various quality control procedures
Additional Responsibilities

Qualifications
Training And Experience
-
Bachelor's degree with major course work in Chemistry, Biology or a related field AND two years of laboratory experience in the use of analytical instrumentation and chemistry
Desirable Knowledge Skills And Abilities

Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of analytical chemistry, including quantity and quality analysis

Comprehensive knowledge of standard chemical tests and laboratory equipment

Skilled in performing chemical tests and analysis of a variety of substances and materials according to prescribed procedures

Ability to make observations and record test results

Working skill in the application of approved techniques in performing analyses and tests

Working skill in planning, assigning, and supervising the work of others

Ability to maintain records and prepare reports

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
Special Requirement
Must possess a valid driver's license issued by the state in which the employee resides.
