Chief Compliance Officer - Corporate | Summit Healthcare Mgmt | Franklin, Tennessee

About the Job:

Chief Compliance Officer (CCO) is primarily responsible for overseeing, developing, and maintaining the compliance program of Summit BHC (together with its affiliates and operating facilities, the “Company”).

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Through the compliance program, ensures that the Company, its employees, and affiliated providers maintain and conduct themselves in accordance with the highest level of ethics and legal compliance.

  • Provides strategic direction and leadership to the Company’s compliance programs, including through the development, design, and implementation of the Company’s annual, risk-based compliance plan.

  • Provides strategic direction and leadership to the Company’s privacy programs and understands information security requirements.

  • Manages, mentors and serves as a member of a high performing team; builds and maintains exceptional employee morale and motivation; and fosters a diverse, equitable and inclusive department and workplace.

  • Frequently prepares materials for and presents them to the executive leadership team, compliance committee, and Board of Directors.

  • Develops and implements policies, procedures and programs that have significant impact on the organization and encourages all employees and affiliated providers to report deviations from the code of conduct or policies and other improprieties, without fear of retaliation.

  • Ensures that the compliance program of the Company is designed to detect, prevent and correct noncompliance with applicable laws, regulations and policies.

  • Through leadership and actions, demonstrates a commitment to continual improvement.

  • Partners with and influences other leaders to identify, manage, and mitigate compliance risks in operational areas, and provides creative and well-informed solutions.

  • Produces, coordinates, and provides compliance education and training.

  • Actively contributes to the Legal Department and the organization generally through development and implementation of industry-leading best practices to build departmental capabilities, processes, and functions.

  • Identifies and meets unmet needs (i.e., gaps and process failures) and responds to new challenges proactively, offers creative yet compliant solutions to advance the best interests of the department and organization.

  • Ensures that consistent and standard advice is provided across the Company with respect to all matters.

  • Works with relevant stakeholders to identify and mitigate compliance risks.

  • Provides clear and practical compliance advice.

Leadership Functions:

  • Identifies and prioritizes issues of importance, including those priority issues as set for by leadership. Collaborates with department leaders and corporate executive leaders, as needed.

  • Demonstrates a take charge/can do attitude and ensures compliance concerns are resolved. Is capable of leading and task organizing Company resources to ensure an appropriate resolution.

  • Communicates instructions, expectations and timelines clearly and concisely.

  • Manages staff scheduling to maintain productivity levels, curtailing unnecessary overtime and/or excessive staff work hours.

  • Maintains accountability expectations for self and staff in all areas of job performance.

  • Engages staff in quality and safety basics to ensure sustained, measurable compliance.

  • Identifies staff educational needs and ensures they are addressed with education programs that are attended by staff.

  • Holds staff accountable for non-compliance and safety concerns, as well as attendance, following policies, behavior, and adherence to the code of conduct.

Education/Experience/Skill Requirements:

  • Juris Doctorate (J.D.) required.

  • Active license to practice law per state requirement required.

  • Ten or more years of relevant compliance health care-related law experience in a law firm and/or healthcare system required.

  • Five or more years of supervisory experience is required, preferably in healthcare.

  • The CCO will have significant experience in one or more of the following areas: (1) employment law; (2) healthcare regulatory law including facility operations; (3) litigation and litigation management; or (4) payor relationships and agreements

  • Can consistently educate and persuade individuals at all levels of the Company and is kind but firm, calm under pressure, thoughtful, and collaborative, with the ability to earn and keep the trust of individuals at all levels of the Company.
