Chief Operating Officer – Land Surveying, Engineering & Architecture

Staten Island, NY | Hybrid | $150,000 – $225,000 + Bonus

An integrated land surveying, architecture, and engineering firm serving the New York and New Jersey metropolitan area. Services include civil and structural engineering, architectural design and filing, land and marine surveying, HVAC design, fire suppression, geospatial solutions, agency filings, and development design.

Position Overview

A growing AEC (Architecture, Engineering & Construction) firm in Staten Island, NY is seeking an experienced Chief Operating Officer (COO) to lead day-to-day operations, drive strategic growth, and oversee project delivery across a multidisciplinary team. The COO will report directly to the Partner Team, and manage Project Managers and support staff.

This is a high-impact executive leadership role for a hands-on operator with deep knowledge of surveying, engineering, and/or architecture — particularly within the New York City regulatory environment (DOB, DOT, NYC Parks, NYCDEP, NYSDEC).

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Develop and execute long-term business strategies aligned with company goals and market opportunities
  • Identify emerging trends in surveying, engineering, architecture, and geospatial industries
  • Lead strategic planning, budgeting, and forecasting

Operations Management

  • Oversee daily firm operations, workflow efficiency, and project delivery performance
  • Implement systems and best practices to improve quality, safety, and operational efficiency
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations including licensing and safety standards

Financial Management

  • Partner with the finance team on revenue targets, profitability, cash flow, and long-term financial planning
  • Approve project budgets, expenditures, and resource allocations

Client Management & Business Development

  • Build and maintain client relationships; manage expectations, deliverables, and timelines
  • Oversee client conflict resolution and communications
  • Support business development through networking, strategic partnerships, and industry involvement

Team Leadership & Culture

  • Lead, mentor, and develop Project Managers and senior technical staff
  • Foster a high-performing, safety-driven culture with a focus on innovation and professional growth
  • Promote diversity, equity, and continuous improvement

Technology & Innovation

  • Leverage knowledge of geospatial technologies including LiDAR, UAV/drone surveying, and GIS
  • Evaluate and implement engineering and operational software to improve efficiency and project delivery

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Land Surveying, Architecture, Geomatics, Construction Management, or related field
  • 10–15 years of experience in surveying, engineering, architecture, or infrastructure design
  • Professional licensure strongly preferred: PE (Professional Engineer), PLS (Professional Land Surveyor), RA (Registered Architect), GISP, or equivalent
  • Proven track record in executive or senior leadership roles managing teams, clients, and complex projects
  • Strong knowledge of NYC regulatory agencies: DOB, DOT, NYC Parks, NYCDEP, NYSDEC

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base Salary: $150,000 – $225,000
  • Annual performance bonus up to 40% of base salary

Please note that benefits are not included in the base salary range.
