Child Watch Associate

Child Watch Associate (Weekday Mornings, 8:50am-1pm)

POSITION SUMMARY

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Child Watch Associate is responsible for providing a safe, welcoming, and engaging environment for children while parents or guardians participate in YMCA activities and programs. Staff supervise children in a short-term child watch setting while following YMCA policies and procedures.

MAJOR TASKS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintains active visual and auditory supervision of children at all times.
  • Ensures children’s safety by checking toys, equipment, and activity areas regularly.
  • Provides a safe, caring, and positive environment for children.
  • Engages with children through reading, coloring, games, crafts, and age-appropriate activities.
  • Maintains the Child Watch area in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Follows YMCA cleaning, sanitation, and illness prevention procedures.
  • Monitors restroom visits to ensure safety and supervision.
  • Keeps supplies stocked and informs the supervisor when supplies are needed.
  • Responds appropriately to emergencies and follows YMCA emergency procedures.
  • Completes accident and incident reports as required.
  • Reports concerns, injuries, or unsafe conditions to the supervisor promptly.
  • Releases children only to authorized parents or guardians in accordance with YMCA procedures.
  • Maintains professional and respectful communication with children, parents, members, and staff.

SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Acts as a mandatory reporter of suspected abuse or neglect in accordance with Oregon law and YMCA policy.
  • Demonstrates the YMCA core values of Honesty, Caring, Respect, and Responsibility.
  • Attends required training(s) and staff meetings.
  • Assists with additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • At least 1 year of babysitting, childcare, camp, youth recreation, or similar experience preferred.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with staff, children, and families.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Must successfully complete YMCA-required background screening prior to employment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to sit on the floor, kneel, crouch, bend, and move quickly while interacting with children.
  • Ability to maintain visual and auditory awareness of multiple children simultaneously.
  • Ability to respond appropriately in emergency situations.
  • May be exposed to bodily fluids, including blood or other potentially infectious materials. Required training and protective equipment will be provided in accordance with OSHA standards.

REQUIRED TRAININGS

Required prior to or within designated onboarding timeframe, as determined by YMCA policy:

  • Child Abuse Prevention Training
  • CPR/First Aid/AED
  • Bloodborne Pathogens Training
  • YMCA New Staff Orientation

TRAINING SCHEDULE

Initial training for this position will typically take place during morning hours before transition into the regular work schedule.

SCHEDULE EXPECTATIONS

This position may support morning shifts, evening and weekend shifts as needed based on program & staffing demands.
