Position Summary
The Childcare Assistant Cook supports the preparation and service of nutritious meals and snacks for children in care. This role helps ensure all food is prepared, handled, and served in accordance with state licensing regulations, food safety standards, and program guidelines, while maintaining a clean and organized kitchen environment.
Key Responsibilities
Food Preparation & Service
- Assist in preparing meals and snacks according to planned menus and nutritional guidelines
- Follow portion sizes appropriate for each age group (infants, toddlers, preschool, school-age)
- Support timely meal service to classrooms
- Help accommodate food allergies and dietary restrictions with strict attention to detail
Food Safety & Compliance
- Follow all food safety and sanitation guidelines (handwashing, glove use, temperature control, etc.)
- Ensure proper food storage, labeling, and rotation (FIFO method)
- Maintain required food temperature logs and documentation
- Comply with Washington State licensing (WAC) and health department regulations
- Support CACFP requirements
Kitchen Cleanliness & Organization
- Maintain a clean, sanitary, and organized kitchen at all times
- Wash dishes, sanitize surfaces, and clean kitchen equipment after use
- Assist with daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning tasks
- Ensure trash is properly removed and food areas remain pest-free
Inventory & Supplies
- Assist with monitoring food inventory and notifying Cook/Director of low supplies
- Help receive and properly store deliveries
- Ensure all items are stored safely and within expiration dates
Collaboration & Support
- Work closely with the Cook and classroom staff to ensure smooth meal service
- Communicate any concerns regarding food quality, shortages, or safety
- Support classroom staff as needed during meal times while maintaining ratios
Compliance & Professionalism
- Follow all center policies and maintain confidentiality
- Complete required trainings (Food Handler’s Permit, etc.)
- Attend staff meetings as required
- Maintain a positive, team-oriented attitude
Qualifications
- Minimum age: [18+]
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Current Washington State Food Worker Card (or ability to obtain prior to start)
- Experience in food service or childcare setting preferred
- Ability to pass background check per state licensing requirements
Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of basic food safety and sanitation practices
- Ability to follow recipes and meal plans accurately
- Strong attention to detail, especially with allergies and dietary restrictions
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment
- Strong teamwork and communication skills
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time
- Ability to lift up to 40–50 pounds (food boxes, supplies)
- Ability to bend, reach, and carry items throughout the kitchen
- Ability to work in a warm kitchen environment
Work Schedule
- Part-time or full-time positions available
- Schedule typically aligns with meal preparation and service times
Pay: $17.13 - $20.00 per hour
