Children's Services Librarian
Collection Development:
· Manage Children’s fiction, non-fiction, graphic novels, and Young Adult collections by analyzing book reviews, patron requests, and circulation trends for monthly purchasing and weeding decisions.
· Development and coordination of Children’s Discovery Packs and STEM kits; includes design and creation of new Kits in collaboration with Materials Coordinator.
· Develop and implement strategies to promote the library's children and young adult books and materials to the community.
· Materials & Programming Budget: Maintains and reconciles City and Friends of the Library budgets for program, activities, and materials purchasing. Prepares annual budget proposals and funding requests for the City and Friends of the Library.
· Cataloging: Create bibliographic and holdings records for new books, materials, and graphic novels in ILS, prepare materials for processing.
· Review donated children’s materials for addition to collection, book sale, discard to recycling, or use for giveaways/promotional needs.
Programming:
· Create and implement educational programs showcasing library resources and services.
· Planning and oversight of existing programs including PR plan, budget, and staffing needs.
· Includes utilization of volunteer labor for non-technical tasks
· Plan outreach opportunities with area daycares and/or schools, local businesses and organizations including City Departments, schools, nonprofits, and area merchants.
· Monthly plan, perform, and preparation for Preschool Storytimes.
· Support Spanish Storytime – ensure group has the materials needed, research and pull books for upcoming programs. Support with purchasing needs, book & activity budget, and program planning.
· Displays: Create in house displays for events, special collections, and holidays.
· Summer Reading Program: Plan, direct, and budget an 8 week Summer Reading program including securing performers, photographer, reserving performance space, secure reading incentive app and logs, all within budget. Plan and coordinate daycare participation.
· Serves as liaison to the Van Alstyne ISD, promoting services, aligning resources, and cultivating collaborative programs that enhance learning.
· Assist the Library Director in the planning and direction of Library activities and programs.
· Compiles and records monthly statistics for Gaming Center and Children’s and YA Programs.
Assists with other library duties as assigned.
Circulation & Patron Services:
Performs all circulation and reference duties including operating circulation software, checking materials in and out, setting up patron accounts, making copies, sending faxes, scanning, and assisting patrons with computer help up to and including setting up email accounts, resume’ creation, attaching files, sending emails and more. Assisting patrons establish and navigate Over Drive eBook account. Providing guidance in the library’s history and genealogy files and resources. Understanding of library paid database service, Texshare, and connecting patrons to appropriate online resources. Creating interlibrary loan requests for any resource or material not found in our collection. Assisting patrons with our mobile print service, Princh.
External Funding:
Seek outside funding such as grants and sponsorships to expand resources and programs. Responsibilities include proposal and budget development, managing submissions, and meeting reporting deadlines
Education/Training/Experience:
Bachelor’s degree or higher in related field
Preferred experience in public library or book store

· Knowledge of current trends in library services, literature, and other materials for all ages.
· Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with supervisors, other personnel and general public.
· Knowledge and skill in the use of troubleshooting computers.
· Skills coordinating and managing multiple projects and assignments.
· Self-motivated; possess ability to establish and meet deadlines.
· Excellent customer service skills and ability to work with the public.
· Assist the public by telephone, computer, or in person with basic reference and directional questions.
· Attend staff meetings, training sessions, professional development workshops & conferences, and other meetings or training as deemed necessary.
· Perform opening and closing duties including turning equipment and computers on/off, and reporting facilities issues to supervising library staff.
· Demonstrate willingness to perform duties in a team environment.
· Ability to sort items in alphabetical and numerical order and knowledge of Dewey Decimal classification system.
· Have flexibility to work evening and monthly Saturdays as needed.
· Possess ability to use variety of office machines, including telephones, computers, fax, scanners, printers, and copiers.
· Comprehend and contribute to the City of Van Alstyne’s culture of Servant Leadership.
Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to operate various machines and/or equipment and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, lift, push/pull, reach, sit, stand, twist, carry, and walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to twenty-five (25) pounds and be able to push and pull up to fifty (50) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Must possess adequate visual acuity and hearing ability sufficient to read, write, hear, and speak clearly in person and by telephone.
Pay: $43,680.00 - $44,990.40 per year
