Location: Atkins Public Library, 480 3rd Ave, Atkins, Iowa
Schedule: Part-Time 20 hours week Monday-Saturday, some evenings.

The Atkins Public Library is seeking a creative, energetic, and enthusiastic individual to serve as the Children’s Library Assistant. This role will assist the Director in developing, planning, and executing engaging programs for children from birth to age 12yrs, including Storytimes for infants and preschoolers, book clubs, craft sessions, and other activities that foster a love of reading and learning.
<Key Responsibilities but not limited to:
- Assist in planning and leading early literacy Storytimes, and children’s programs throughout the year. The programs will be in house, daycares and outside the library setting where the Atkins Library holds a children’s program.
- Assists library patrons in finding materials they want, answering reference questions, providing readers’ advisory, computer assistance, making copies, laminating, etc.
- Assist in preparing and organizing program materials and displays.
- Shelve and maintain collections.
- Create a welcoming and engaging environment for library users.
- Operations of circulation desk, along with day-to-day operations of the library
- Opening and closing.
- May include evening or weekend hours for programs or events, flexible hours is a must.
- Assist with cataloging and processing of materials for the children’s area.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
<Essential skills and qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework in education preferred.
- Library experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and skills.
- Experience working with children in an educational or recreational setting.
- Strong communication orally and in writing, outstanding customer service, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Comfortable using computers, library software, and standard office equipment.
- Ability to establish priorities, develop long-range plans for the implementation of new services, programs, or solutions to problems.
- Passion for working with children; a genuine love for children and the ability to interact with them effectively is crucial.
- Adapt at multitasking and organization with keen eye for details.
- Ability to comprehend and follow instructions and communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
- Continuously research and stay informed about the latest developments, trends, and best practices in library services, technology, and collection management.
Physical Requirements:
- The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, speak, hear, and use hands to operate office equipment, and reach with hands and arms.
- The employee is at times required to lift and/or move up to twenty-five pounds, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
