Role Overview

As a Chinese Speaking Tutor, you are a mentor and a guide. Your primary focus is not just general language instruction, but the specific, high level training of pronunciation, tones, and oral fluency. You will work with learners to bridge the gap between "understanding" Chinese and "sounding native."

The ideal candidate is obsessed with the mechanics of speech and finds deep satisfaction in taking a student from absolute zero to confident, natural conversation. You must be an expert at identifying subtle tonal errors and providing the corrective coaching necessary to produce "native sounding" speakers.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct high energy 1-on-1 and small group speaking sessions via Zoom.
  • Implement specialized training focused on Chinese phonetics, including initials, finals, and the four tones.
  • Guide absolute beginners through the first steps of oral production, ensuring a strong foundation from day one.
  • Lead intermediate learners in conversational practice, correcting nuances to ensure they sound natural and professional.
  • Track student progress and provide actionable feedback on speaking performance.
  • Collaborate with the coaching team to refine speaking curriculum and instructional methods.
  • Participate in weekly team check-ins and quarterly planning (Rocks).

Qualifications

  • Language Proficiency: Advanced B2 to C1 level in English is required for effective instruction and collaboration.
  • Teaching Expertise: Proven experience tutoring Chinese specifically for English speakers. You must have a track record of helping absolute beginners reach conversational ability.
  • Technical Skills: Professional experience teaching online via Zoom and managing digital schedules.
  • Phonetic Specialist: Deep understanding of Mandarin tones and pronunciation. You should be able to explain the "how" behind native sounds.
  • Interpersonal Skills: High emotional intelligence and patience. You are a self-starter who brings a positive, encouraging energy to every session.
  • Experience: Professional experience in a remote work environment.

Schedule & Logistics

  • Employment Type: Contractual.
  • Status: Full-time or Part-time (To be discussed).
  • Location: 100% Remote.
  • Meeting Requirement: Availability for a weekly department meeting (Time TBD).

Compensation Structure

  • Rate: $15 to $20 per hour
