The Sexton of St. Peter’s Church is responsible for the cleanliness, maintenance, physical appearance and safety of St. Peter’s buildings and grounds. The Sexton will perform general janitorial and housekeeping duties and is primary in observing and reporting any problems related to plumbing, heating, air conditioning and/or other maintenance-related issues within St. Peter’s Square. The Sexton is also responsible for specific tasks as needed at St. Peter’s Cemetery on Pilottown Road in Lewes.
This is a full-time position at 30-40 hours per week, including weekends. The position calls for the employee to work flexible hours as conditions demand. The Sexton will report to the Parish Administrator, Rector and Wardens. Competitive pay based on experience; additional compensation for special events. Employee will be eligible to receive benefits including pension.
· Proactively perform routine maintenance and basic repairs. Maintain basic toolkit.
· Identify and report any heating, plumbing and electrical system problems and needs.
· Repair minor plumbing problems.
· Paint and maintain finishes.
· Set-up and break down furniture for all regularly scheduled meetings/events weekly and for special events as needed. Assist in setting up and taking down decorations as needed for holidays and special events.
· Keep kitchen clean and organized.
· Maintain a 30-day supply of janitorial supplies. Notify the Parish Administrator when supplies are needed; keep accurate records.
· The following janitorial duties are expected of the Sexton on a regular basis or as needed to maintain the buildings in St. Peter’s Square:
o Clean all bathrooms thoroughly in all the buildings.
o Dust all furniture, fixtures, vents, etc. in all rooms
o Sweep, vacuum, and/or wet mop appropriate carpets or hardwood floors on a regular basis
o Replace light bulbs when necessary
o Collect trash and recycling from offices, conference rooms, etc.
o Mix and use cleaning solutions safely and store in a secure area
o Maintain the cleaning supply closet
o Wash all windows inside and outside, including doors on a regular basis
o Wipe all furniture and doorknobs/handles with chemical disinfectants
· Assist with other activities of the parish, such as weddings, funerals, the Annual Art Show, major Parish Life events, etc.
· Remove dead flowers and plants from the sanctuary and other buildings as needed.
· Open, close, and lock appropriate entrances/exits each day and after special events as directed by the Rector, Parish Administrator, and Vestry members.
· See that safety devices such as fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, defibrillators, and emergency lights are inspected as required. Maintain log of inspection dates.
· Keep all building entrances and grounds clear of debris/litter. Keep leaves and dirt away from entrances.
· Augment snow removal contractor when sudden conditions necessitate keeping entrances clear of ice and snow; responsible for salting, etc. outside walks during icy and inclement weather.
· Other projects and duties, as assigned by the Parish Administrator, Rector, or Wardens.
· Pilottown Cemetery duties (as may be needed):
o Mark spaces for new graves
o Dig spaces for burial of urns
· Minimum high school diploma or equivalent.
· Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Sexton or equivalent experience in a service/custodial industry.
· Knowledge of housekeeping operational procedures, basic sanitation requirements/controls and applications of relevant cleaning chemicals.
· Ability to understand instructions/directions on cleaning solutions, etc.
· Ability to operate and maintain power tools and other equipment.
· Mechanical maintenance knowledge and experience a plus.
· Demonstrate flexibility in the work environment and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
· Ability to multitask and prioritize the workload.
· Ability to communicate in a productive manner with staff, parishioners, vendors, trade persons, and others as deemed necessary.
· Ability to work collaboratively as a team with clergy, staff, volunteers, and church members.
· Must have adequate reliable transportation.
· Ability to provide and receive work-related text and/or voice messages from staff and/or wardens via the use of a personal cell phone.
The position involves work in a wide range of conditions that can be physically demanding. The Sexton must be able to:
· Lift/carry/push weights of up to 40 pounds.
· Climb on step stool or ladder to complete tasks of the position.
· Able to stand, bend, reach, and stretch for extended periods of time.
· Able to dig up to 3 feet into ground for burial of urns in cemetery
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $20.00 - $22.00 per hour
