The CHW X-Ray Welder is responsible for performing high-quality welding on chilled water (CHW) piping systems, meeting radiographic (X-ray) inspection standards. This position requires a high level of skill and precision in welding processes (typically GTAW/TIG, SMAW/Stick), with a focus on weld integrity, cleanliness, and adherence to industry codes such as ASME and AWS.
Key Responsibilities:
- Interpret and follow detailed welding procedures, blueprints, piping isometrics, and technical drawings specific to CHW systems.
- Perform welding on chilled water piping systems (typically carbon steel or stainless steel) in accordance with X-ray (RT) quality standards.
- Execute welds using TIG, Stick (SMAW), or other required processes depending on material and code specifications.
- Conduct root pass, hot pass, fill, and cap welds ensuring complete fusion and minimal defects.
- Ensure all welds meet or exceed standards for radiographic inspection (ASME Section IX or project-specific criteria).
- Conduct or assist in pre-weld preparation including fit-up, alignment, and tacking of pipe joints.
- Maintain traceability of welds, including proper marking and weld log documentation.
- Participate in non-destructive testing (NDT) processes, including X-ray inspection coordination.
- Follow all site-specific and general safety procedures, including use of PPE and hot work permits.
- Maintain welding equipment, tools, and work area in clean and safe condition.
- Collaborate with QA/QC inspectors, foremen, and engineers to resolve weld-related issues.
- Support pressure testing and flushing of CHW systems as needed.
Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent; trade or technical school preferred.
- Minimum 3–5 years experience as a welder in industrial or HVAC mechanical piping environments.
- Proven experience in X-ray quality welding on CHW or similar process piping.
- Certified welder per ASME Section IX, AWS D1.1, or project-specific WPS (Welding Procedure Specification).
- Ability to pass required weld tests for radiographic standards (6G, 5G, etc.).
- Strong knowledge of pipe materials, joint configurations, and welding metallurgy.
- Experience with safe rigging, lifting, and handling of pipe and fittings.
- Excellent hand-eye coordination, attention to detail, and manual dexterity.
- Able to read and interpret welding symbols and piping specifications.
- Familiarity with OSHA safety regulations and mechanical piping codes.
- Willingness to work in confined spaces, at heights, or under adverse conditions.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Current or prior certification from a recognized body (e.g., ASME, NCCER, AWS).
- Experience working on large-scale HVAC or industrial piping systems.
- Familiarity with pre-fabrication shop and field welding environments.
- Valid OSHA 10 or 30 certification.
- Understanding of QA/QC documentation and turnover packages.
Work Conditions:
- Work may be performed in both shop and field environments.
- Exposure to high heat, noise, confined spaces, and elevated work areas.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physically demanding tasks.
- Work may require overtime, weekend, or night shifts depending on project needs.
