Summary of Position
Under the direction of the Circulation Supervisor, the Circulation Assistant will be passionate about providing courteous and high-quality customer service at the circulation desk daily and throughout the library, be highly enthusiastic about assisting with maintenance of library collections, and live for shelving and shelf reading. The Circulation Assistant also provides library patrons with basic reference and computer assistance.

The minimum starting rate is $20.60 - $25.38/Hourly* + Competitive Benefits

Essential Functions / Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Prepares circulation desk for daily operations such as opening and closing routines of library, retrieving library materials from book drops and ensuring computers are operational.
  • Works the circulation desk daily, assisting patrons with checking in and out items, answering basic reference questions, offering basic reader advisory, and assisting patrons in locating library materials.
  • Assist with programming and outreach prep.
  • Assist with leading programs when needed.
  • Assist with book processing and weeding the collection as needed.
  • Shelving of library materials and shelf reading for accuracy.
  • Handle patron complaints with tactfulness and resolve issues with patron library cards.
  • Collect fines and fees on patron accounts and notify patrons of overdue items and reserves.
  • Maintain library displays.
  • Assists patrons in the operation of photocopiers, faxing, and with computer and software usage.
  • Operates a variety of standard office and library machines, such as fax machine, copiers, and computers.
  • Answers directional, informational questions, policy, and procedural questions from library patrons.
  • Issues library cards and ensures patron information is current and correct.
  • Follows all library and city policy and procedures.
  • Answers telephone and provides routine information over phone and through email.
  • Monitors and maintains all library public areas to ensure compliance with library policies and procedures.
  • Regularly monitors and maintains the tidiness of the library, ensuring a welcoming environment.
  • Performs shelf reading to ensure correct order and shelves returned items on daily basis.
  • Performs all duties and special tasks as assigned.

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of public library service.
  • Knowledge of integrated library systems and equipment.
  • Knowledge of collection development and cataloging principles.
  • Strong computer skills and familiarity with a variety of reading and information related electronic devices and software.
  • Knowledge of technologies and practices used within a public library.
  • Ability to understand, speak, and write English clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to respect the privacy of individual users.
  • Ability to multi-task successfully, remain calm, and act resourcefully in the performance of job responsibilities.
  • Ability to exercise judgment and discretion in dealing with the public and in interpreting and applying policies and procedures.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and reach conclusions; deal with problems involving several variables.
  • Ability to pay attention to detail and maintain accuracy and flexibility.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public.
  • Possess expertise with personal computers, Microsoft Office Suite software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher), social media website maintenance. Ability to perform minor troubleshooting of computers.
  • Must be prepared to work any day of the week including weekends and any hours of library operation.
  • Occasional earlier and/or later hours may be required. In order to accommodate the needs of the library hours of operation and/or assist with covering staff shortages as necessary, the work schedule may vary week to week, day to day, or hourly.

Qualifications, Education, and Experience

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have, or be able to obtain within 90 days of hire, a valid Texas Driver’s License and eligible for coverage under the City of Kyle’s vehicle insurance provider.
  • High School Diploma or GED
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate's Degree
  • Public Library experience
  • Bilingual in Spanish
Schedule
  • Monday - Thursday: 12:00 PM - 4:00 PM.
  • May 11, 2026 - July 31, 2026

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, and use hands and arms to handle or operate objects, tools, or controls. The employee may also be required to reach, climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch and/or crawl.

The employee is regularly required to communicate effectively, including speaking on a telephone, and must be able to hear in environments with background noise. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

The employee must be able to regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, push a fully loaded book cart weighing up to 75 pounds and occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
Work is typically performed in a climate - controlled indoor environment. However, while working in a library setting, the employee may be exposed to dust, noise vibrations, fumes, odors, communicable diseases, humidity, and varying lighting conditions.

Employment with the City of Kyle is contingent upon the outcome of record checks and verifications including, but not limited to, criminal history, driving records, education records, employment verifications, reference checks, and employment eligibility verifications. Selected candidates for positions will be subject to a background investigation and to pre-employment drug screen, depending on the position, may require a physical assessment upon a conditional job offer.
