Will have frequent contact with the public by phone and in person and assist library users in obtaining library cards, paying library charges, and checking materials in and out of the library.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Duties vary depending on the team to which the employee is assigned. Other duties may be assigned.Checks library materials in and out, and enters transaction records into a computer database using a keyboard or scanner.Explain library card rules to library users, inspects users' identification, and issues library cards.Retrieves information from a computer and notifies library users of overdue and lost books.Calculates and collects library charges from library users.Answer library users' policy questions regarding overdue materials, reserving material and related policies.Refer library users requiring professional assistance to the appropriate staff.Sorts, separates, arranges, files or distributes incoming products or material.Assists in maintaining the accuracy of the online catalog.Troubleshoots computer software and hardware problems in a Windows-based environment.Assist patrons with searches, computer and equipment use.Accepts patrons’ printing payments, makes change, and balances cash drawer with daily receipts.Sorts items for re-shelving and shelves them.Maintains organization and neatness of department, including tending to the copy machine as needed, repairing damaged items, clearing desks and tables and straightening the shelves.Sorts, shelves, and files various library material accurately according to library classification systems.Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.Must have reliable transportation and be able to work at any library location.Perform basic readers advisory services.Other tasks and duties as
assigned.Works a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.Regular and timely attendance is required.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Needs knowledge of principles and practices of customer service and phone etiquette, standard office practices and procedures, and record keeping practices and procedures. Must also know business English and spelling, basic arithmetic, alphabetical and numerical filingNeed to have the ability to calculate solutions to basic mathematical problems, accurately sort alphabetically and numerically at a reasonable speed. Should have the ability to perform duties and responsibilities independently, as well as understand and follow instructions both orally and in writing. Must be able to work standard office equipment and programs including the library’s automated system, computer, printer, and fax machine. Must have the skills required to learn job-related material through oral instruction, observation, as well as comprehend and make inferences from written material. Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, other departments, and the public. Must be able to work a flexible schedule including nights and weekends.
