Key Responsibilities:
- Design & Drafting Support:
- Assist civil engineers in preparing detailed design plans, blueprints, and drawings for infrastructure projects using CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software (e.g., AutoCAD, Civil 3D).
- Create detailed diagrams and layouts for roads, bridges, drainage systems, and other civil infrastructure.
- Modify and update designs based on feedback from engineers or clients.
- Site Surveys & Inspections:
- Conduct site surveys and inspections to collect data on topography, materials, and existing infrastructure conditions.
- Measure and record dimensions, locations, and other technical data using survey equipment.
- Report findings to engineers and help determine project feasibility.
- Assist with the analysis of soil conditions and environmental factors that may affect design or construction.
- Project Documentation & Reporting:
- Prepare reports, cost estimates, and other documentation for project planning and regulatory compliance.
- Maintain detailed records of project data, design revisions, and construction progress.
- Assist with the preparation of environmental impact assessments and other regulatory filings.
- Material & Equipment Management:
- Help identify materials and equipment required for construction, based on design specifications.
- Ensure that materials used on-site comply with quality standards and project specifications.
- Assist in coordinating deliveries and managing inventories of materials.
- Construction Support:
- Provide technical support during the construction phase by assisting engineers and construction teams with questions and clarifications.
- Monitor construction sites to ensure adherence to design specifications, quality standards, and safety regulations.
- Help with troubleshooting issues that arise during construction.
- Software and Technical Tools:
- Use engineering software (AutoCAD, Civil 3D, GIS, etc.) to assist with design, drafting, and project management tasks.
- Operate survey tools, GPS devices, and other technical equipment to assist with data collection and site analysis.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Work closely with engineers, architects, and other professionals to provide technical support and ensure project goals are met.
- Communicate with clients, contractors, and government agencies as needed, particularly for data collection and reporting purposes.
Skills and Qualifications:Education:
- Associate's degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Technology, or a related field (Bachelor's degree may be preferred for some positions).
Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in CAD software (AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit, etc.).
- Knowledge of surveying tools and equipment (e.g., total stations, levels, GPS).
- Familiarity with structural, geotechnical, and environmental engineering principles.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications.
Soft Skills:
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Good communication skills, both written and verbal, for reporting and collaborating.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks.
Experience:
- Previous experience as a Civil Engineering Technician, Engineering Assistant, or in a related field is often preferred but may not be required for entry-level positions.
- Familiarity with local building codes, construction methods, and industry standards is beneficial.
Certifications (Optional, depending on location or company):
- Certification as a Certified Engineering Technician (CET) through a professional organization (e.g., ASET, NICET, or similar) may be preferred.
- OSHA or other safety certifications.
Working Conditions:
- Office-based work for design, drafting, and project planning activities.
- Fieldwork may involve site visits to collect data, perform surveys, and inspect construction progress.
- Work may include outdoor exposure to various weather conditions and varying levels of noise or other environmental factors on construction sites.
- Regular travel to project sites may be required.
- Potential for extended working hours, particularly as deadlines approach or during key project milestones.
