On-Site Inspection and Monitoring

The primary role of a Civil Inspector is to conduct thorough site inspections and monitor daily construction activities. This involves:

  • Inspecting work in progress: Verifying that the construction aligns with the approved plans and specifications.
  • Checking materials: Ensuring all materials delivered to the site meet the specified quality standards and are stored correctly. This includes reviewing contractor material submittals.
  • Performing tests: Conducting or overseeing civil and structural tests to confirm the quality of the work.
  • Observing safety: Monitoring site safety practices and reporting any concerns to the Health & Safety Engineer.

2. Quality Assurance and Non-Conformance Management

A key responsibility is to identify and address any work that doesn't meet the required standards. The inspector must:

  • Identify non-conforming works: Find any deviations from the project specifications or design.
  • Document issues: Prepare detailed inspection reports and site records, documenting all findings, including photographic evidence.
  • Generate corrective actions: Issue reports and coordinate responses to ensure non-conforming work is corrected in a timely manner.

3. Collaboration and Reporting

Civil Inspectors serve as a vital link between the contractor, the client, and the engineering team. They are responsible for:

  • Liaising with stakeholders: Interacting with contractors, subcontractors, clients, and laboratory staff to verify project requirements and coordinate on-site activities.
  • Maintaining records: Keeping meticulous records of inspections, tests, and work executed.
  • Preparing reports: Compiling and submitting daily logs and detailed reports on project progress and any issues encountered to the Resident Engineer or Assistant Resident Engineer.
