Our deep understanding of the specialty insurance market is the foundation for our customized solutions, backed by targeted risk control and claims services. Our employees are passionate about providing insurance coverage that’s aligned to our targeted customer groups.

Intact’s Global Specialty Lines business spans across more than 20 verticals in four distinct markets: U.S., Canada, UK and Europe. The following opportunity is for our U.S. team.

The opportunity

We currently have an opportunity for a Claim Consultant to join our General Liability Claims team, based in our Plymouth, MN or Denver, CO office on a hybrid schedule or remotely nationwide. A Claim Consultant is responsible for investigating, handling, and resolving complex, highly specialized Commercial General Liability claims that generally settle over $500,000, often involving litigation. The ideal candidate can independently operate within very broad company guidelines and very high authority levels in the settlement of claims, can make appropriate recommendations to management and other key stakeholders on coverage and settlement of claims, and can support our business partners through communication and education about specific claims.

A Claim Consultant’s responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provide expert handling of high exposure and complex claims, including the formulation and implementation of strategy on liability, damages, coverage, reserving, investigation, and resolution.
  • Lead and support litigation management on large, high-stakes matters, including selection of counsel, pleadings and discovery support, expert coordination, mediation preparation, and settlement negotiations.
  • Guide teams through effective negotiation and Alternative Dispute Resolution. Attend mediations, settlement conferences, and trials as required.
  • Determine coverage, draft coverage correspondence, and timely respond to coverage questions raised by insureds and others.
  • Conduct an appropriate level of investigation to determine exposure, establish adequate reserves, and make timely adjustments as required.
  • Identify questionable claims and consult with SIU for further direction as appropriate.
  • Determine settlement value and negotiate proper settlement of claims within authority. Provide recommendations for settlement and disposition of claims exceeding authority level.
  • Document in a clear, concise, and timely manner all relevant activity on assigned files and make recommendations for additional activity as appropriate.
  • Communicate as needed with underwriting business partners regarding claims trends and legal climate. Provide expertise and insight as requested relative to needed coverage changes or enhancements.
  • Maintain a strong professional knowledge of regulatory and legal environments and apply this information effectively.
  • Stay abreast of state license requirements and participate in continuing education as required.
  • Mentor or train less experienced claim representatives. Develop and deliver technical trainings and provide guidance to other departments within the organization, as needed.

The expertise you bring

  • 7-10 years of progressively more complex, specialized claims handling experience, with proven success handling complex, high exposure claims, including files in active litigation.
  • Bachelor’s or equivalent experience degree required; JD or significant litigation management experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound, defensible decisions under pressure and to communicate them clearly to stakeholders at all levels.
  • Advanced negotiation skills and experience with mediation and other ADR processes.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a disciplined approach to documentation, file quality, and accountability.
  • Track record of mentoring, coaching, and elevating technical performance across a team through practical, respectful guidance.
