The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced litigation attorney to handle complex property, insurance, surety, and bond-related matters, including litigation and administrative proceedings in state and federal forums. Candidates with strong experience in surety, bond, construction, indemnity, or complex claims litigation are strongly encouraged to apply.
The attorney will represent the company in judicial and administrative proceedings, evaluate claims and legal controversies, prepare pleadings and legal opinions, and manage cases through all stages of litigation, mediation, arbitration, and settlement. This role also involves close collaboration with adjusters, underwriters, and other areas of the company to support the effective handling of claims and legal exposure.
A day in the life...

Represents the company in state and federal courts, as well as in administrative forums.

Appears at administrative hearings in accordance with the Uniform Administrative Procedure Act (UAPA) and other applicable laws.

Advises management on compliance with the company's laws and regulations through detailed reports.

Stays updated on state and federal case law, as well as laws and regulations related to the insurance industry or the company's products.

Evaluates claims and legal disputes to determine risk exposure and define defense strategies.

Drafts pleadings, motions, contracts, legal opinions, and reports.

Collaborates closely with adjusters, underwriters, and other company areas for comprehensive case management.

Handles settlement agreements and participates in mediation and arbitration processes.

Prepares periodic reports on the status of cases and legal exposure.
What you will need for success

Active license to practice law in Puerto Rico.

Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited institution.

Minimum of five (5) years of litigation experience, preferably in surety and insurance cases.

Experience in courts, depositions, and administrative proceedings under the LPAU.

Extensive knowledge of government regulations, laws, rules, and case law for the insurance industry.

Knowledge in handling legal research applications (Westlaw, Lexis Nexis).

Fully bilingual in English and Spanish (written and verbal).

Maintains constant communication with customers and employees and is able to exchange accurate information. (Written and Oral).

Maintains constant eye contact 20 inches or less away for more than 6 hours a day when working on a computer 90% of the time. Ability to visually process writing and other materials.
